Congratulations to the winner of the 2009 PressPress Chapbook Award:

Scott-Patrick Mitchell for his work songs for the ordinary mass. Scott-Patrick receives chapbook publication with PressPress and $500.


Judges said Mitchell’s manuscript showed particular originality and experimentation, earning him the 2009 Award.


Mitchell is a poet and writer who studied at Edith Cowan University. Originally from England, Mitchell is currently based in Perth and works as a journalist and writer for the gay and lesbian news publication OUTinPerth.


He has been awarded the Peter Cowan Writers Centre’s Young Writer in Residence in 2004 and the Vibewire.net Poet in Online Residence by John Kinsella in 2006.


Mitchell runs the literary street art zine MoTHER [has words…] which he launched in 2007. In 2009 Mitchell will be editing The Cottonmouth Anthology and launching his PressPress chapbook.

Judging of the 2009 PressPress Chapbook Award was challenging as the entries for the award were of a very high standard showing significant experimentation and originality. Entries came from Canada, China, New Zealand, The USA and all Australian states – with a significant contingent from Western Australia this year. There was one bi-lingual entry.


Several of the short list have been offered publication.
