The Aim of Waste Audits & Management Plans

1. AIM


Waste audits and waste management plans are used to reduce the liability and costs associated with wastes generated on a site.

A waste audit should fulfil the following requirements:

identify all waste streams generated on the site;
quantify and characterise each raw material type and waste stream;
calculate the costs for handling and disposal of each waste stream;
calculate the cost of utilities and services;
calculate the cost of raw materials to replace the waste material;
determine the liability associated with the generation, storage and handling of each waste
....stream.
identify options to minimise or eliminate wastes.

 

2. WASTE AUDIT METHODOLOGY

The on-site waste audit process involves:

identifying and documenting all waste streams, their quantities and nature;
interviewing site staff in areas which generate wastes;
observing waste generation processes;
reviewing waste handling practices to determine the potential for any liability;
reviewing disposal routes, contracts and discharge permits;
obtaining information regarding the costs associated with current waste handling and ....disposal; and
obtain costs for raw materials and utilities (gas, electricity, water).


3. WASTE AUDIT REPORT

The subsequent report provides the organisation with the following information:

development of a mass balance documenting raw material inputs, products out and wastes ....generated;
estimation of current waste handling and disposal costs;
estimation of utility and service costs;
identification of areas where wastes, energy or water usage could be reduced, or eliminated; ....and
identification of areas where wastes pose a potential, or actual threat to the environment.
