About Jodi

Portrait of Jodi

Jodi Rose (formerly Jodi Wintz), ballerina, choreographer and teacher, is deeply dedicated to the rich tradition of classical ballet. During her career, she danced a variety of featured roles with the Joffrey Ballet Company in New York. Along with Robert Joffrey, Gerald Arpino and Jonathan Watts (Joffrey Ballet), she had the opportunity of working with many dance legends such as Asaf Messerer (Bolshoi Ballet), Alexandra Danilova (Ballet Russe de Monto Carlo), John Hart (Royal Ballet) and David Howard (Royal Ballet).

After studying the R.A.D. syllabus and further training under the caring guidance of Natalia Clare, former soloist with Ballet Russe, Jodi was awarded a scholarship to George Balachine’s School of American Ballet in New York. One year later, at the age of 16, she was discovered by Robert Joffrey and invited to join the Joffrey II touring company. Next step was promotion to the celebrated Joffrey Ballet Company.

Jodi’s career with the Joffrey spanned the magic era of New York dance in the 70’s. The choreography of Sir Frederick Ashton and Twyla Tharp embodied the Joffrey repertoire. Apart from her work with the Joffrey, Jodi received critical acclaim while touring as a guest artist in such traditional ballets as The Nutcracker, Coppelia and Sleeping Beauty. She was also honoured to be selected to perform with the Bolshoi Ballet and Margot Fonteyn.

Jodi returned home to Los Angeles and expanded her artistic horizons. While continuing to perform, she began teaching, coaching, acting and took up the position of Creative Director of a dance company for the Los Angeles Music Centre on Tour. Her list of teaching credits include: Edge Performing Arts Centre, University of Southern California, Great Rivers Arts Festival, Voight Dance Centre and, by invitation, conducted a series of special classes in Japan.

In addition, Jodi was a regular guest instructor on the U.S. dance convention circuit with Dupree Dance Academy and LA Danceforce. She has privately coached such Hollywood celebrities as Olivia Newton-John, Charlene Tilton, Justine Bateman and Richard Simmons.

Upon relocating to Sydney in 1994, Jodi was appointed Principal of the Classical Ballet department at the David Atkins Dynamite Dance Studios. Today she divides her time between teaching open classes and adjudicating for the Cecchetti Society, the British Ballet Organisation and, more recently, the R.A.D. Isobel Anderson Awards. Since 1997, she has published “The Dancer’s Newsletter” with a growing subscription base. Jodi is married to Australian Swimming Legend, Murray Rose, and they have a son, Trevor.
