These filters, up to the mid-1980s, were in much demand as the interface between the analog and digital domains. They were in demand as anti-alias filters.
As the achievable speed of digital signal processors increased, the need for such precision filters has reduced, until finally a simple RC filter is adequate in many instances. The technique which makes this possible is that of over-sampling.
However, there remains a small market where the bandwidth of the signal being processed, and the speed of the DSP, make it no longer possible to over sample.
It is here that a linear phase (or equiripple group delay) lowpass filter is often required.
