The 50th Anniversary of Technology Ski Club

Technology Ski Club celebrates its 50th year of official formation in June 2005. To help celebrate this occasion, an invitation has been extended to ALL Members and Associates of the club over its time of existence. The invitation is available in the April 2005 newsletter.

A history of the Club exists but also a timeline of the early formation history of Technology is provided below (prepared by Roger Beattie and Peter Gidley).

May 1954 - Technology Ski Club formed from students and staff. Letter from Mr Bob Robins to Mr Ainsworth of KSPT (Kosciusko State Park Trust) seeking help on site. Professor Baxter correspondence regarding name of club and affiliation with The New South Wales University of Technology Ski Club.

July 1954 - Letter seeking building quote of a ski hut for recently formed TSC club. Bob Robins tries to buy pre-fabricated house in Cooma.

September 1954 - Letter to KSPT investigating possibility of forming a company called Technology Ski Club Limited. Bob Robins presents discussions with builders (Frank Wolstoneholme Pty Ltd) of a ski hut.

October 1954 - Notice posted at NSW University of Technology to recruit members and advise of meeting.

30 March 1955 - Quote from builders, Frank Wolstoneholme Pty Ltd for structure at Perisher.

14 June 1955 - Inaugural meeting of the Technology Ski Club. Elected committee comprised:

President – WRS Briggs
Secretary – R. Beattie
Treasurer – R. Robins
Building Co-Ordinator – K. Weiss
Social – Miss P. Hopkinson
Committee – Miss J D’Arcy, B. Thornton, Dr J. Anderson, Professor S. Angyl

A Constitution was ratified, the first committee was elected and Conditions of Membership decided upon. Guthega was selected as the initial site for investigation of a suitable building site. This meeting is now regarded as the official formal formation of the Club.

July 1955 - Guthega negotiations start with KSPT regarding a site and access to available huts.

November 1955 - WRS Briggs resigns as President of Technology Ski Club due to United Kingdom work posting.

December 1955 - Trip to Kosciusko area by Committee. Offer (£800) made to SMHA for Guthega property.

July 1956 - Marked site on map in Guthega with request for use lodged with KSPT.

July 1956 - Letter to KSPT suggesting formation of Co-operative for Technology Ski Club.

September 1956 - Falls Creek approached re possible site. Also still trying to find out what happening with the Guthega site offer. Alternative site in Perisher discussed. Meeting of club with following revised Committee:

Treasurer - Ted Butler
Social – Sylvia Matthews
Committee - Don Maher, A. Wallace, K. Weiss, D. Allen, B. Thornton, K. Smith

January 1957 - Seeking permission from KSPT to start works.

4 February 1957 - AGM Meeting at University and to ensure Club survival, membership funds to be raised to must reach £500. E. Butler (Treasurer) succeeding RG Robins.

Building Committee – R. Beattie, D. Mathews, KS, K. Weiss, B. Thornton, RG Robins, D. Allen.

Final approval for a site in Perisher Valley granted by KSPT. First work party organized. Cars Bruce Matthews, K. Johnson, T. Henderson, Bob Robins, D. Guyatt, J. Curtin, D. Maher, R. Beattie

23/24 February 1957 - First work party organized.

8 March 1957 - AGM Professer S. Angyal (President) and R. Beattie (Secretary) re-elected. Decided to hold meetings on first Friday of month at 8.15pm. D. Marr Building co-ordinator elected.

5 April 1957 – Regular meeting with 35 members attending. Secretary gave first building report. A ton of cement and reinforcing delivered and installed. Toolshed in area partly carried to site. 6 Yukon packs used for carrying materials. 2 of 4 foundation trenches dug.

3 May 1957 - Monthly meeting. Legal sub-committee formed to investigate forms of incorporation. Committee comprised N. Powell, R. Robins (convenor), A. MacDonald, Brian Thornton.

July 1957 - R. Beattie secretary still. Considering a co-operative structure for club.

15 July 1957 - Co-operative formed with accepted submission to the Registrar of Co-Operatives.

19 July 1957 – Bob Robins as Chairman with news and confirmation of Co-operative being formed. First elected directors were:
