Masks are known to serve functions beyond the pragmatic ones of preventing criminals and terrorists being recognised. The anonymity provided by masks has a marked psychological effect, allowing {for example} disinhibition of aggressive or otherwise taboo impulses. This has been used not only by primitive cultures, but also by Britain's SAS and other special military forces throughout the world. People wearing masks are more likely to take on the role implied by the mask, and less likely to let their own personalities interfere with their actions. Similar effects apply to war-paint or make-up.
