"Munster Terrace's" first offering in seven years.. (and the only one
still available)..
Although over this time all members of Munster have be involved in various
recorded projects.. some of which have been released commercially (See "Applestick News").. This is the first by "Munster" (as
such) since 1995.
The package is a 2 C.D concept album with accompanying "Guide-Book", and the
Intro to this booklet goes somewhere towards explaining the reason/s for this
lengthy break..
BACKGROUND:
"THEN": Formed in 1985; "Munster Terrace"
spent 1986 to 1992 spreading its name across the south-eastern part of this
great country by attempting to be "all things to all audiences"...
Carrying a repertoire of (what became) over 150 covers meant that (almost)
any (Rock) audience (or era) could be well catered for, and with the band
quickly becoming a working proposition with full staging (P.A and lighting
rig), crew and transport; the belief was that the creative aspect would also
flourish, and benefit; all members being passionate about their song-writing.
It worked to a point.. But can you really be "All things at one time" ?
The story is long, containing many "Spinal Tapism's", but the bottom line
is that although each release received reasonable exposure at the time.. 2
singles, 1 album and appearances on 2 compilation C.D's is in no way indicative
of how many originals the band was actually producing, nor is it sufficient
basis for a "following" to have a serious interest in the Band's creative
growth in terms of recorded product. Reasonable grounds for frustration, and
at the end of 1992; the Band split in two..
A new lineup of Munster Terrace was born as The Flying Red Dogs formed.
The 1993/94 lineup of "Munster" (intentionally) saw the Band shift focus to
it's newest member: guitarist; Rob Broatch. This injected a freshness, and
enabled the Band to become a variation on the theme, rather than a clone (or
copy) of that which went before. However; Rob was a rock and roll gypsy..
two years in one place was along time, and when he decided to drift north;
it was decided to take the Band "off the road". Again.. only 3 compositions
were released from over this era - though many were left unfinished.
And so.. To end an era; an album ("The Transition") was released; containing
previously unavailable originals (from both lineups) that had regularly been
included in the live repertoire, and - it was officially announced that (1995)
the name would exist only for the purposes of being an outlet for all members
to record (apt) material under.
The creative arm of "Munster" now had exclusive rights.. (finally) given breathing
space.. Free from market expectations, industry expectations, even audience
expectations.
And so (though we weren't aware of it at the time); some of that which became
this "Story Book" was conceived (amongst other things).
MEANTIME: Various circumstances have seen the original lineup of "M.T" drawn back to the stage. Initially this was for the pleasure of the novelty, and with reluctance for any regularity, but over time the band has relaxed to the idea by determining to keep the two "entities" separate..(Gigging being for fun; as it always should have been).
NOW (2002): Munster Terrace is no longer
a noble but confused attempt at putting all things "Rock and Roll" into one
bag.. it is two distinct things..
THE PERFORMING ARM (Original
members) can be found playing (mainly low profile) gigs of various types;
all around the place, on a regular basis.. helping to keep the spirit of Oz
Pub-Rock alive.. combining true and faithful versions of classics from all
eras into one energetic, foot-stompin', singalong, yet cohesive "Rock Show"..
The musical manifestation of: "Have a good time all the time" (Viv Savage).
And.. THE CREATIVE ARM ("All" members) has been tending
to growth of a number of projects.. some of which has come together to become
this.. Best described as:
GREG'S STORY BOOK OF DEMO'S
WHY SO?
Given the current relationship between Munster's two individual
entities (as described); the Band has been keen for a release of original
material (even if partly only to "state" that their artistic side is active
if not alive and well) but is mindful of keeping this separate from the "gigging
side of things" ..
In the same way that songwriting has been freed up, the criteria for selection
of material for combination into a "package" has been freed up.
This being the first real offering (for sooo long) from the "creative arm";
the songs presented should be as they first came to be.. ie: true to their
essence; of the style, and with the "vibe" that saw each piece create itself
and grow into it's own particular "form". Then; a combination should be assembled
such that the whole thing becomes one piece.. each song one of many parts
to the ensemble.
NOT to envisage a desired package and then attempt to write towards this,
NOT to rewrite, rerecord, remix, and/or recombine material to fit this...
That's about all the criteria wanted, and for this reason it seemed apt to
use the..
DEMO'S:
The version of each song herein is in every case the first finished demo of
the finalised arrangement (Only the "joins" have been changed or added.. to
act as mortar in the building process) and for this reason; the idea of creating
some sort of story with the songs seemed like as good a way of reinforcing
a unifying theme as any..
THE STORY:
Should be generic.. Life and death in the modern world; the constant tug of
war between both sides to every coin.. Good and bad, right and wrong, high
and low, "normality" and alternatives, reality and "madness".
It should be one person's story of dealing with this, but also a band's story
of functioning within a world dealing with this, and also the story of a "band
person" dealing with functioning both within and without this.. All at the
same time.
Paul came up with the concept, then he, Dave, Dave and Dave gave Greg the
job of "editing".. (ie:) Choosing the songs, the order, and the way of joining
them. Hence the GREG on the Title.
(The only other point of relevance is that as there are)..
TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY (and at least two sides to every personality);
There should be two perspective's on/of the story.
Hence there being TWO (Parallel) stories - On one C.D each.
