Modification for Two Speed Rear Axle Gear Box fitted to ST2 and MT14H cars

Just about every rear axle gear box I have worked on or owned (some 30+) about 90% of them have had water in them when I first got them.

This I believe is mainly due to the failure of the seal where the gear shift arm enters the gear box. Water runs down the gear shift lever and past the seal F7608 which has failed in service.

This sealing rubber part No.F7608 is the same seal that is used to seal the throttle valve on two stroke engines. The seal on the two stroke engines is held in place by spring pressure thus keeping the seal in place at all times. On the two speed gear box there is only a clip F8951 holding the seal and therefore the seal tends not to seat all the time. As the gear box shifting components wear in service the seal becomes next to useless.

This simple modification discards clip F8951 and replaces it with the throttle spring 37724. The pic shows clearly how the spring is fitted between the packing washer M18528 and universal joint 49521 for this simple yet effective modification. I have found it also gives the gear box shifting lever a better feel.

A good used spring will suffice and I would also suggest that some zinc oxide grease would not go astray on the shifting lever arm where it passes thru the top of the gear box.

I have some spare springs and other gear box parts on hand email
