Gazza's M19 gets some new engine seals

This interesting standard gauge M19 belongs to Gary Davey of Melbourne Australia...It started life as a broad gauge 63" M19 operated by South Australian Railways and was converted to standard gauge by a long time stallwart of the hobby Russell Savage back in the late 80's. As you can see the car is a bit of a hybrid with ST2 rear end, side panels and floor pan. That front rail is a definite home made job but I reckon it looks pretty good.

Gary has asked me to fit some new engine seals for him so I took some pics of the job.

Dirty flywheels and that black oil streak on the water jacket is a good sign the seals are gone. There was also that tell tale hiss from the seal area when the crankcase was under compression.

The motor is out and time to remove the flywheels....as you can see they are really oily. The seals must be really bad.

A 5 ton hydraulic three jaw puller makes easy work of removing the flywheels. Note the flywheel nut is loosened about three turns only as with this type of puller the flywheels literally go bang at about a million miles per hour. No nut = no more life.( no gags please)

Prizing out the woodruff key. The seal has blown out of the housing..egads!!

What a God Damn mess! I was always worried about using the CR18425 seal..this is proof they are no good for this application as the previous owner had replaced them not so long ago.

Off with the bearing cover.

The timer side of the engine after a good clean. The timing cam and wiping block is in good order and the oil seal race is still serviceable. I will line up the new seal so it runs on a different part of the race.

I fitted new original fit double lipped seals which I also have for sale . I also fitted a replacment cover as the old seal had been spinning in the original casing causing some wear.

I normally use a press to fit seals but for those of you who dont have one a socket and a vice work just fine...make sure everything is lined up or the seal may go in crooked. Note the matching paint on the seal and cover.

Nicely home and ready to be fitted

I can't recommend this OMC gasket compound highly enough. It does wonders around your motor and is great for sealing all those annoying leaks on your C5/C8 carb and fuel line.

All fitted and ready for reassembly. The inner bearing race had an extra large chamfer on it so I had to press the seal in a tad more for the outside seal lip to mate properly. The ROC is now purring like a kitten.
