Tea Tree 2009 story and pics

The weather forecast for Friday the 30th October of strong to abating North-Easterly winds, followed by extensive thunderstorm activity greeted the 1858 anglers taking part in the 26th Annual Snapper Competition / Victorian Amateur Snapper Championship on Melbourne Cup  weekend.

This year’s winner, Western Port specialist snapper angler, Martin Kraulis also proved that lightning does in fact strike twice. He took away the Title and trophy, plus second place in 2007

The 2009 champion is pictured with his magnificent snapper weighing 10.8 kg, caught at Corinella on the freshest of squid.

Martin said that he had fished hard and patiently for the snapper and thought that it was another large stingray, having spent time and effort in an earlier encounter.

The second fish of 8.6 kg was the product of Westernport fisherman, Sean Walker – Donnelly of Berwick.

The third heaviest fish weighing 6.54kg came from Port Phillip Bay fisherman Greg Dixon of Endeavour Hills. Greg said he missed third heaviest fish a couple of years ago by 200 grams and was a little nervous as the bigger fish were placed on display.

The Snapper Point Angling Club would like to thank all of their loyal sponsors of the event and the anglers for the support of Tea Tree 2009.

Frankston anglersTony Blackford, Chris Sperway and Marlon Blackford present their fish at the weigh in.

Nice by-catch

Justin Scott of Rye was fishing in the Tea Tree Competition on Westernport on Friday night.

When he hooked up he thought he had the winning snapper but was surprised with this magnificent Mulloway.

He took it to the Rye Tea Tree weigh station to verify its weight.

The scales went 21kg.
