Definitions:
tsunami

Definition: A series of catastrophic ocean waves generated by undersea earthquakes or landslides, volcanic eruptions, or the impact of a large meteorite in the sea.

 

Context The word "tsunami" comes from the Japanese term for great harbour wave.

What's the difference between a Tsunami & a Tidal Wave?
tsunami
A series of travelling waves of extremely long length and period, usually generated by disturbances associated with earthquakes occurring below the ocean floor.

tidal wave

  1. The wave motion of the tides.

  2. In popular usage, any unusually high and therefore destructive water level along a shore. It usually refers to either a storm surge or tsunami.
