Reviews of unlisted artists

MEO245 > Possibly THE BEST rock/synth Aus outfit of the early 80's. Their album SCREEN MEMORY is one of the great unacknowledged classics of that era.

Many thanks to Chris Ball for the following info, dating from 1997 :

I was looking for a reference to MEO's 'cause the guys in that band are my oldest and closest friends. In fact I was the lead singer with them before they became MEO. We were a bunch of guys from Tassie who came to the 'mainland' to hit the bigtime. We called ourselves Guided Tour in those days and we played a whole bunch of self-penned songs which were influenced mainly by the UK scene in the pre-punk era. I'm talking about stuff like Bowie, Led Zep, Alex Harvey, Yes , Genesis, Roxy Music et al.

Any way I went back to Hobart quite dispirited after a year, but Paul Brickhill and Paul Northam stuck with it and formed MEO, making the Screen Memory album and the EP which was titled Rites of Passage. I reckon that the track Sin City was/is one the best songs to ever have been recorded in this country.

Where are they now? Well Cam (the drummer) lives in New York and works as a freelance cartoonist/illustrator. Paul Brickhill (keys) works for the Australian Ballet School, Paul Northam (guitar&vocals) has a screen print business in Melbourne and Mark Kellet (bass) is a carpenter.

As I said, all these guys are still buddies and having returned to the big smoke a mere 15 years ago, I proudly include myself amongst the clique. Paul, Paul and I still get together every 3rd or 4th Friday nite, stoke up the project studio and jam like crazy - just like we used to when we were at high school together. (Rock'n'roll will never die.)
- Chris Ball.

I received this email from Ann Tolman (ALTolman at aol.com) in November 2007

I met Paul (B), Paul (N), Chris, Greg (Pullen) and another guy Michael Dwyer (who made an electric guitar for Chris) when they were still at school. At that time they were doing cover versions of Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep etc. Paul & Paul provided the 'harmony' and amongst other things, Chris provided the 'character'. They should have stayed together in that line up but they were just kids and, well, we'll never know what might have been as a result.

I actually think Chris is back in Hobart, and Paul and Paul are probably still in Melbourne - although there are many P Northams and even P Brickhills in Victoria, I just don't have the time to start calling.

Daddy Cool > What Australian alive in the 70s could forget them ? Ross Wilson's great first big band. Ross later went on to found Mondo Rock.
