Fantasy Man . An OutOfThisWorld Teenage Fantasy Sci-Fi Romance
Tony Nelson lay in bed pretending to sleep. There's nothing
worse than being sixteen years old, he thought.
Tony had a problem. In fact, he had a lot of problems, but there was one
had bugged him a lot this year.
Girls. Damn them all, he thought.
When he was younger, his attitude to girls was simple : he never looked
at or spoke to any girl unless circumstances made it hard to do otherwise.
In the classroom, for instance.
Not that he really hated them. It's just that all his mates were boys,
and he simply didn't need anyone else. He just couldn't see any reason
to associate with the opposite sex.
But just this year, Tony found himself WANTING them ! To talk to them,
to hang around, to take them out, to ... Trouble was, girls liked Tony
as much as he used to like them - not one bit ! Tony knew that he needed
help, and he knew who could help him.
His good friend, the Being from the Sixth Dimension.
Tony had discovered Astral Travelling by accident when he was thirteen.
Since then he had been able to leave his body sleeping in bed at night,
and visit his friend from a different Astral Plane.
The Being from the Sixth Dimension (whom Tony called B6 for short) had
helped solve many of his problems. Tony felt that this was a problem big
enough to discuss with B6.
"I have a solution for you" announced the Being, after Tony had
explained his predicament.
"You do ? Alright ! Hit me with it, B6."
"I'd better explain a few things first. How much do you know about
... "
"Oh, lots" interrupted Tony, bragging. "I know that girls
want it as much as boys do. But as I said, they don't want it from me."
The Being smiled indulgently. "And you know how often they think about
it ? Boys AND girls, that is."
"Someone told me that people my age have a sexual thought every two
minutes. No wonder so many of us do badly at school."
"I'm glad you know all this, Tony, because my solution is along the
same lines. Think, Tony, of how often you indulge in fantasies and daydreams."
Tony nodded. "Yeah. Very often."
"So does almost everyone your age. And what they dream most of is
..."
"Sex !" completed Tony
"Right. Now, what if you could live out fantasies ? I mean, as though
they were really happening."
Tony's brain clicked over for a few moments, trying to grasp the full implications.
To live a fantasy ?
"Is it too big a concept for you, Tony ?"
"The possibilities are endless. I wouldn't know where to start."
"I'd be here to help you."
"Sounds unreal. Tell me more."
"What I'm about to offer you will allow you to become part of certain
types of fantasies ... to such an extent that they seem to be really happening,
except that you'd be in no physical danger."
"What types ?"
"Certain other people's."
"Who ?"
"Girls your age. And you'll be amazed at what they dream about."
"Let's get this straight, B6. You're offering me the chance to participate
in the fantasies of girls my age ? And, in doing so, I'll feel as though
it's really happening?"
"That's right, Tony."
"OK, I'll do it."
"Just a minute, Tony. There's a condition."
"I knew it. There's always a price to pay. Let's hear it."
"After you accept this gift - and a priceless gift it is - you won't
be permitted to have a real, physical or sexual relationship with any girl.
Or boy, for that matter. If you do, you lose the gift."
Tony sighed. "Gee, if it was anyone else, I'd say that was a tough
condition. But for me, it's an easy choice. There isn't a girl on the face
of the earth who wants me. I think it's a very fair deal. I'll do it."
Kathy Grainger was a quiet, plain girl. She'd gone out with a few boys,
but none of them did anything for her.
Except Tony Nelson. Kathy was in love with Tony, and had been for nearly
six months. She would lay awake at night, wishing Tony would ask her out
again. But that wasn't very likely. Not after last time.
Kathy first met Tony at a party nearly a year ago. He asked her if she'd
like to go for a drive with her, and she agreed. He drove the car to a
quiet spot and parked. She let him kiss her a couple of times. Thus encouraged,
Tony tried to take it further. But Kathy got scared. She drew back, saying
Sorry, I don't want to go that quickly. So Tony drove her home in silence.
She waited for him to call her again. But he didn't. He lived across the
other side of the city and went to a different school, so she could do
nothing but wait.
She discussed the fiasco with her friends. After a while, she realised
that Tony had been very nervous despite trying to act tough. He had not
yet learned what to do when you go out with a girl. (In fact, he knew only
what his mates had told him : get her into the back seat, get her clothes
off, and get at it.)
As weeks turned into months, Kathy found herself thinking of Tony more,
not less. Sometime during those months of no contact, Kathy realised that
she was in love with him. She hadn't felt much for him when they met, but
she did now.
She went out with other boys, but that was just to fill in time more than
anything else. Fill in time, waiting for Tony.
After all this time, she didn't kid herself that he would REALLY phone
her up. So she did the next best thing. She turned over in bed, and called
up an image of Tony in her mind. Tonight, like so many nights before, she
recreated her first encounter with Tony, but with a difference : nothing
would go wrong this time. They'd kiss romantically and long, he wouldn't
push her, he'd take her home at the right time, he'd see her again for
the next few nights, then when she was ready ... and it was beautiful.
He was such a wonderful, considerate boy.
Kathy closed her eyes and slept peacefully.
For the next few days, Tony could hardly wait until bedtime. Each night,
The Being would match him up with a different girl. The Being was careful
to pick only girls who were unlikely to ever meet Tony. B6 would screen
the particular girl's fantasy first, to see if Tony in any way would fit
the requirements. He never selected a fantasy in which Tony would feel
uncomfortable, or in which he would be unwelcome.
Tony did not mind B6 being so in control. To tell the truth, he had felt
intimidated at the sheer number of possibilities. And he trusted The Being
absolutely.
Tony was thrilled at the different fantasy roles the
fantasies required him to play. A tough Western gunman, who loved nothing
and no-one, except for one young girl. Big movie or rock stars, who would
turn down million dollar contracts to spend more time with their girlfriends.
Sport heroes. Bank robbers and murderers. Even the Prime Minister.
Tony always had vague dreams of being an actor, but this went far beyond.
He didn't just play the role; he WAS the rock star, the gunman, the champion
cricketer. What could be better than this ?
Tony was in animated discussion with The Being.
"This is great, B6 ! How long can I keep on with it ?"
"Until you choose to give it up, Tony."
"Are you kidding ? I'm happy to keep doing this forever." "You
never know, Tony. People and things can change." Tony regarded his
friend with puzzlement. "Y'know, B6, sometimes I don't understand
you."
"Oh, I'm very deep, Tony. But you'll understand, given time. Let me
ask you something : is there are girl you really care about ? Or perhaps
in love with ?"
Tony considered. "Well, there was this girl I saw briefly. I did some
stupid things and she slapped me on the face. I wanted to ask her out after
that, but I was too embarrassed, and I know she didn't like me very much
anyway. I ... I don't think about her anymore ... well, perhaps every now
and then."
The Being chuckled. Who was Tony trying to kid ? Himself, most likely.
Whoever this girl was, it was clear that Tony's flame still burned for
her. Teenage boys can be so transparent.
"What's her name, Tony ?"
Tony lay awake in bed, thinking about the conversation he'd just had with
The Being. I can't believe B6 wanted to know who she was, thought Tony.
He's not gonna find out anyway. I lied and told him it was Samantha Czinski.
Tony dismissed the matter from his mind, and prepared for tonight's Fantasy
Performance.
"OK, B6, I'm ready" he whispered.
The words were barely out of his mouth as he materialised on the scene.
Tony looked around. It was Longwood Drive, which was only a few kilometres
from where he lived. Great, thought Tony. For the first time, I'm in a
territory I'm familiar with. Other fantasies had placed him in the Old
West, Canberra, London, even Outer Space.
The next thing to do was to locate the character he was to play in the
fantasy. To make it easier, B6 arranged it so that Tony could meet and
talk with the character before the fantasy actually began. Tony stood at
the spot B6 had designated the rendezvous point, and waited. Presently,
a young man of Tony's age walked towards him. It was night time and dark,
but Tony could not mistake the figure who approached. It was ... himself.
"What the hell is this ?" asked Tony.
"Exactly what it looks like" replied his fantasy double. "Tonight,
the girl whose mind we're in is fantasising about you."
"I don't believe it. All the girls I know think I'm a jerk."
"Well, don't just stand there complaining. Do you or do you not want
to participate in this fantasy ?"
"You bet I do."
"OK. Go to it. She's over there. Now, remember what B6 told you ..."
"Yeah, I know. Follow the script. He told me a thousand times."
The double walked off, leaving Tony to approach the girl waiting there.
Tony opened his mouth to speak the first of his scripted lines. But they
jammed in his throat as he recognised Kathy Grainger.
Tony stood dumbly for a few moments. The Being had said that he wouldn't
be matched with anyone he knew. He'd have words with B6 later. For now,
he had to press on. The first words that left his lips were stuttered,
but that was OK, because it was in the script. The rest was easy. Kathy
took him through the scene of their first meeting ... with a few telling
alterations. Oh, so that's what I should have done, thought Tony, each
time he saw something different from what really happened.
He played along with the whole scene perfectly. But he blew it at the end.
Just as Kathy was about to say goodbye, Tony blurted out
"I'm sorry Kathy. You must think I'm a real jerk."
Kathy sat up with a start.
What ? He wasn't supposed to say that, she thought.
Tony slapped himself on the forehead. "Oh God, I've really blown it,
now" he said. "T-tony ?" asked Kathy. "You're ... really
Tony ?"
"Yes, Kathy."
"How did you get into my mind ?"
"That's kind of hard to explain. But, all those things you made me
say and do, just now. Was that the way you wanted it to happen ?"
"Yes. That's how I wish it had been. And it can be that way, now that
you know. I love you, Tony."
This was too much for Tony.
"Stay right there, Kathy. I've got to talk something over with someone."
"I'm not going anywhere, Tony."
**
Tony went to see The Being immediately.
"I can't believe it, B6. She said she loves me. And it must be true,
with all that stuff she put me through. B6, would you mind terribly letting
me be able to ... to ..."
"You do realise what you're asking, Tony ? If you want to have a relationship
with Kathy, you'll have to give up the Fantasy Power."
"Yeah, it's a tough bargain. But I'll do it. I think it's worth it.
Can't live in dreams all my life, can I ?"
"It won't be as easy as it was in the fantasy, Tony."
Tony nodded. "I know. But I still have my own dreams to fall back
on. And I have what I've learned from you, B6."
"Which is ?"
"Well, when you get right down to it, we all want the same or similar
things. And if we don't get them, we can still dream."
Tony said goodbye to The Being, then paid a visit to Kathy ... in the flesh.
