AUSTRALIAN WOODBLOCK ENGRAVINGS

Boxwood was usually the preferred timber for the manufacture of wood engraving blocks due to its hard nature and quality to enable extremely fine carving on the end grain. The design is carved into block ends, cutting away the sections that are not required to hold ink - the raised sections remaining transfers the image to the paper. Extremely fine detail can be retained using this method.
