I met him the first time on the Barkhor – a bustling pilgrim circuit and gathering place around the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. We sat together for awhile and I showed him my map of Tibet. He was on pilgrimage from somewhere near Tsedong, to the east. Other pilgrims crowded around us, full of suggestions as I took his photo and arranged to send him a print. He clasped my hands warmly and we bid each other farewell. We were to meet several times at other holy places around Lhasa. We would embrace and rub foreheads. Looking deep into each other's eyes before saying goodbye.
