Christian Bookshop Employee "Let Go"

John Wiser E-mail Discussion

This collection of e-mails documents the discussions that passed between a Christian bookshop employee, John Wiser, and his employer, Family Christian Stores, when discovering that FCS was playing the hypocrite by purchasing Bibles from a company that also distributes the Satanic Bible.  Because of his discernment and his willingness to stand for truth and integrity (qualities that are noticeably lacking in a growing number of Christian bookshop owners and managers), he was "let go" from his employment.

I first became aware of this situation through an e-mail I received from Sister Tracy of the Jesus Is Lord website.  Tracy's comments are below, followed by John's e-mails.

I share John's sentiment that discerning Christians need to unite and protest loudly about the reproach that is being perpetrated upon the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ by people who, while professing Christianity, distribute products that are leading unsuspecting seekers of Truth into following after and serving other gods.

If you feel led of the Lord to write and encourage John in his bold stand, his e-mail address is included in the documentation below.

"Who will rise up for me

against the evildoers?

Or who will stand up for me

against the workers of iniquity?"

(Psalm 94:16)

Summary by Sis. Tracy (webmaster@jesus-is-lord.com):

This brother was "let go" from his job in Family Christian Stores (FCS) when he asked if Zondervan (publisher of the NIV) is owned by Harper Collins the publisher of the Satanic Bible.

Note to reader: To verify that Harper Collins publishes the "Satanic Bible", do a search at www.harpercollins.com. The following quote came from their website:

"...Zondervan, HarperCollins' Evangelical Christian publishing division, published the top five bestselling Bibles in the CBA marketplace, including the # 1 bestseller, The NIV Study Bible. Long considered the world's largest Bible publisher, Zondervan published 2/3 of the bestselling Bibles worldwide."

Subject: How I stood up to Zondervan/FCS

Hello,

I just want to say that I use to work at a Christian store called FCS. As of today at about 5 P.M. I was called and told that I was to be paid for my hours for Friday and all of next week and after that I was to be 'let go'. I asked if I was fired but was told that no, I was just being 'let go'. What happened is what one may ask and this is a short version of my story that began on 2/27/02.

I found your site and after checking out the info on Zondervan (Family Christian Stores was owned by Zondervan at one time) I wanted to know what this was all about. I am in charge of the Bible section in the store where I 'use' to work and thought that this was another hate group. What I found was something that will change my life forever and I just have to tell every Christian I know.

I went to look up info on that of Harper Collins Publishing and found that they (being Harper Collins Pub.) as well printed a satanic bible as well as other books that we as Christians fight so hard against. I was hurt, stunned, and could not believe my eyes. I had to know the truth and with that I went looking for some answers.

As of 2/27/02 I called Family Christian Stores home office and asked to speak with someone about the history of our store (that being FCS). I was put through to a lady that asked me how she could help and after telling her I wanted to know about the history of FCS I was transfered to another person. This person was not in and was told that if I left a message he would get back with me. I did leave my name and nunber and told him that I worked for FCS and wanted to know what our history was. My day ended and I thought nothing more of it. That is until I got a call on 2/28/02 about noon.

It was him returning my call and I was asked how he could help me. I ask about if FCS was owned by Harper Collins Pub and was asked why I wanted to know this. His tone had changed and now I was really begining to wonder. I told him that I worked for FCS for two years and that I understand that we used to be Zondervan (or owned by Zondervan) and that in turn Zondervan now is owned by Harper Collins Publishing. I asked if we, FCS, were owned by Harper Collins Pub. as well and was told that we are no longer with Zondervan, we are our own company.

I was happy to hear this but I still wanted to know about that NIV/Zondervan/Harper Collins Pub. deal and asked if this was the same Harper Collins Pub. that made the Satanic bible and was told that we (FCS) were no longer with Zondervan and that Zondervan was and is still a good Christian group.

But what about the profits for the NIV that Zondervan make which is owned by Harper Collins which makes satanic bibles? I was told that I needed to talk with my manager and/or my district manager.

I was as well told that if I was unhappy with the company that I could stay or I could go, that was up to me. I told him that if I find out that this is true (that Harper Collins Pub. is the one and same that makes satanic bibles and yet makes the NIV) I would leave FCS. He in return asked if what was true? I told him that if Harper Collins Pub. was the same as the one who made/makes satanic bibles and NIV while getting money from both.

I was told that they are sinners and that even he himself was a sinner. I was shocked!

This man was trying to make right what was going on. I told him that I was sinner as well but that we need to try to better ourselves. He told me that I need to now talk with not my manager but the district manager the next time he (the district manager) came to our store.

I hung up hurt and wondering why I could not get a straight answer out of a Christian store that I believed in.

I thought my day was done and after returning home from work I get another call, it was around 5 P.M. It was my manger at FCS and she was calling to tell me that she has heard I called home office. She said it was fine but that after talking with them that they have decided that I need to take Friday (tomorrow) and all of next work week off, paid. As well I was informed that I no longer work for FCS and with that I asked if I was fired, which I was told no, that I was being 'let go'.

I asked about the Harper Collins Pub. as well and she said that Zondervan is a Chrisitian company and that they (Zondervan) still are there to help Christians everywhere. I asked but what about the satanic bibles and was told that Zondervan is Christian. I stated that Zondervan was owned by Harper Collins Pub. and that meant that Harper Collins Pub. is getting paid for both NIV bibles and satanic bibles and was told this would be a correct statement but that she did not know all of the answer BUT could find out for me. As well she told me that Christian music is under the other big names that put out all of this stuff that we are so against and that is only because this helps keeps the cost down.

I am hurt, I am shocked, and I am scared. I have looked away and turned my back and now look at us. We are giving money to people who put out satanic bibles along with NIV translations.

I may have (which I feel I did lose) lost my job because I stood up for what I believe in and know what? I would do it again and I plan to make sure that I tell everyone I know what I have learned today.

I am not perfect but I as well know that God can work through me and use me to be His hands and feet. I will serve a God that will protect me and watch over me. I will serve a God that I know can and will provide. I may meet people who don’t care to listen but I will tell people who want to know.

May God bless you and keep faith;

John Wiser

(Ex Member of FCS #142)

P.S. I am sorry for my spelling and what have you but I just need to share with you this news. I may not be perfect but I am not what I use to be. Hope to hear from you if you would.

Tracy,

Here is the response I received from Zondervan. I understand why Harper Collins Publishing would let Zondervan carry on with the NIV, for it is said that the NIV is the number one selling translation (at least when I worked at 'the christian store'). God Bless and Keep Faith;

John

[Tracy's note: for the love of money is the root of all evil.]

Dear John,

Thank you for your concern over Zondervan and our relationship with HarperCollins Publishers. With this correspondence let me try clarify the nature of the relationship between the two companies and give you some assurance that the Zondervan you know and trust is the same company we have been for over 70 years, meeting the needs of people with resources that glorify Jesus Christ and promote biblical principles.

HarperCollins is part of News America Publishing Group, a division of News Corporation. While Zondervan has a financial reporting relationship with HarperCollins and News Corp., we operate autonomously on a day-to-day basis. In fact, our parent company strongly encourages Zondervan to stay true to our mission and core Christian values. We have remained true to the heritage of our founders, and we are committed to building our business around those virtues.

All our products: books, Bibles, gifts, kids, academic, and new media are designed around our mission and set of shared values that include integrity, accountability, and respect. For over 70 years we have not knowingly wavered from these central commitments, nor have we been asked to at any time by HarperCollins. In fact, we are fortunate to be part of an organization that supports our mission and enables us to create Christ-centered resources that meet people's needs.

Thanks again for your correspondence.

MR Zondervan

Dear John,

Greetings in the Lord Jesus Christ.

I have just read the account of your being "let go" from your employment at a Christian bookshop... I commend you for you stand for truth and for your commitment to warn your brothers and sisters in Christ of the deception that is being perpetrated upon them.  Here in Australia, I have been attempting to encourage Christian bookshop managers to be more responsible about what they sell to the Christian public. An article that I wrote, as well as a number of e-mail discussions I had with various managers, is posted on my website. The address is included below. The responses I received from these managers demonstrates the same lack of integrity, honesty and fear of the Lord that you discovered in your situation. The love of money dictates what will, or will not be sold. The reason I am writing is to ask your permission to publish your account on my website.

Thank you for your consideration, and may the Lord encourage you and strengthen you as you contend earnestly for the Faith once delivered to the saints.

Yours in Christ's service - Hughie Seaborn

Hello Hughie,

This is John. I wanted to say thank you for the kind words, they are much needed. I have been telling people about what I have found out and it seems that a lot of people are asking me if it is worth it and I have been told that I need to watch what I say and to who I say it to.

I would be happy to share my story with you and want to send along some e-mails that were writen to me by FCS and Zondervan.   I also want others to know that we need to unite and help one another in this fight that we are in, there is no other way we are going to make it otherwise (for we are His children). I feel at times that I am all alone in this fight and I have yet to feel the rejection of the church I am going to. I have talked with the pastor about this issue and I have yet to get with him and hear his reply, this runs deeper then I have ever thought.

May I ask you something? I ask that we may unite like never before and please share with others that I am only one BUT I will not back down and I will not let go of what we Christians have fought against. At times it is hard because a lot of people have to look into this and they are affraid of what they will find. What I want them to know is that we are selling ourselves for a translation that is by a company that makes money off a 'satanic bible' as well and we are to consider this as a 'good' translation? I think not.

I hope that we can be friends and that I can share with you in these times that are coming. If anyone that comes to your site would ever like to talk with me please tell them that I would be honored. This is something that we need to get out to other Christains and please as well let them know that this is NOT only the FCS chain but any Christian store that carries the Zondervan line. Till next time...

God Bless and Keep Faith;

-John

Here is a e-mail that I have from the FCS company about the Zondervan/NIV/Harper Collins Publishing. Hope that this will help others and let all Christians know that this is bigger and runs deeper then one might think.

Dear FCS,

As long as FCS is selling books sold by Zondervan who in turn is owned by Harper Collins Publishing (who puts out a 'Satanic bible' among others items I as a christian find very insulting) I ask that you remove me at once from your listing. I want nothing more to do with FCS nor do I any longer shop at your stores. It is a shame that FCS is selling what they call christian books by someone that is owned by another that as well puts out a 'satanic bible'. This is not christian and you should be ashamed.

I hope that FCS looks into this for I know that I will telling everyone I know about what I have learned. I guess that only thing I can say is that you are not the only christain store that is selling Zondervan items, that just makes me relize how wide spread this really is.

I will keep you in my prayers for it is in His hands.

God Bless and Keep Faith;

John

Hello John,

We have unsubscribed you per your request. It is important to note that Zondervan is owned by Harper Collins out of New York City. However, it is also important to note that Zondervan has full editorial and sales control of their publications. Harper Collins bought out Zondervan in the late 1980's when they were on the verge of being taken over by others in the open market place. Harper purchased them and made them a private segment of their conglomeration of publishing businesses.

Among Harpers other companies are Harper San Francisco (which publishes books for other non-Christian religions). We do not carry anything by Harper San Francisco because their materials would not fall in line with our Mission and Vision. We do however carry many Zondervan titles as they have had a long history of editorial intergrity. And, provide great value to the daily Christian walk.

Here is Zondervan's Mission Statement from their Website:

Our Mission: To be the leading Christian communications company meeting the needs of people with resources that glorify Jesus Christ and promote biblical principles.

This seems pretty clear that they would not be supportive of any efforts to undermine Christianity. In doing so they would be undermining the backbone of their business.

When Harper bought out Zondervan in the late 80's there was great concern that Harper would change Zondervan and take away the integrity that they had developed since their founding by the Zondervan brothers in the 1930's. However, Harper immediately committed to allowing Zondervan to continue business as usual and only asked that they develop & maintain a sound and profitable business.  Harper also commited that they would not interfere with the editorial work of Zondervan.  To their credit Harper has lived up to that commitment. And, Zondervan has performed very admirably since that business relationship took place.

Harper and Zondervan have co-published several books, including the much publicized autobiographies of public figures like, Oliver North, Dan Quayle and most noteably Billy Graham's autobiography entitled, "Just As I Am."

Harper has even taken some of Zondervan's best works (including the NIV Bible translation) and published them in a mass market paperback to be distributed in general market retailers. When this happens it only extends the reach of Christianity to those who might not ever visit a Christian retail establishment.

While it is good to be on the watch for the influences of evil. It is also good to give credit where credit is due. Zondervan has been one of the most honored and credible Christian publishers for over 70 years and has been an industry leader in many ways. If Family Christian Stores saw anything to the contrary we would be hesitant to continue to do business with this company.

The reality of the business world is that Christian publishing has become a very attractive business for secular companies to invest in, and several Christian publishing and music companies are owned by companies that do not have a Christian emphasis. We are continually examining these business relationships to make sure that they publish materials that line up with our Mission and Vision.

Thank you for your comments. I trust that you will prayerfully consider this issue.

Darryl,

That is all fine and good until you get to the part where you need to tell chrsitians that their money that is paying for NIV is going towards books such as the 'satanic bible'. Do you not think that is important? I think as a christian that is very important, period!

I will ask once more that I be taken off any and all list that FCS may have and thank you for honoring my request in advanced.

I have a lot to learn in my walk with God but I will tell you this much that it is a sad day when Harper Collins Pub. is making money off a 'satanic bible' and the NIV bible. As a matter if fact I have returned all of my NIV and Zondervan books to FCS. I will be speaking with others about this very subject as I have already shared my views and what has happened to my over this.

FCS is supporting Zondervan which is owned by Harper Collins Pub. which in turn puts out 'satanic bibles'. I will not have my money going to them and while I have a lot of looking to do into more of the items I buy.  FCS has stated it claim with Zondervan and I in turn am happy to share this news with other christians.

I asked to be taken off a list and hope that this will be done. FCS needs to go its way as I am going mine. I have gave FCS two years of service and I am now wondering why I waited so long to look into the Zondervan/FCS scene. I can say that FCS has made me more aware of what is going out there in the world and what one is willing to do for money.

God Bless;

John

Hello John,

As stated in my previous correspondence your e-mail will be removed from our list.

If it is your conviction to hold this against Zondervan and then ultimately FCS, then I would assume you would also hold it against every Christian retailer and Secular retailer that sells Zondervan and/or Harper material. Furthermore, you would probably want to look into all the sub-labels and businesses that Harper controls and be sure they are included. If your children attend public schools you will probably want to check into their academic books. Harper has a division that publishes textbooks. On their website I see that they also publish Childrens, Business, Self-Help, Religion and Spirituality, Cookbooks, Health, Mystery, Poetry, Romance, Science Fiction & Fantasy. So if your local grocer carries books or magazines you will probably want to be sure none of those are published by Harper or it's subsidiary companies. If so, then you will probably have to find another source for your grocery shopping. Basically it sounds like your shopping options have been reduced significantly.

Zondervan has little control over the publishing choices of their parent company. I believe it important to look at the credibility of Zondervan and the integrity they have brought to the world through their publications. And, most importantly the lives have been changed by the written word of God published by Zondervan over the past 70 years. It was God's word that changed the lives, but God used Zondervan and outlets like FCS and countless other retailers to distribute the His Word to the masses.

It is my personal belief that it is very unjust to hold Zondervan accountable for what Harper Collins does. And, to continue this cycle of protest to the retailer is even less just.

I just ask that you prayerfully and carefully consider what you say and who you say it to, first making sure what your motivation is. May God be with you.
