International recognition of Dave Dallwitz quickly followed. The
American jazz magazine Down Beat described the Ern
Malley Jazz Suite as "a beautiflul, brilliant piece of
eccentricity". On his solo piano album Waltzing Matilda
(1973). the legendary jazz pianist Earl "Father"
Hines included the Dallwtiz composition Willochra Haze.
In 1974, Hines paid tribute to the Australian composer by recording
a complete solo 'piano album of Dallwitz compositions, entitled Piano
Portraits o fAustralia. In 1975, the New Orleans pianist Armand
Hug recorded two Dallwitz corn positions-Eucla 1.5mph and Portrait
ofAdeMonse5ou,gh_.jn his solo album, Huggin The Keys.
Many bands have recorded the popular Dallwitz composition Cinderella
Girl in Australia and abroad.
Along with a handful of other Australian composers Roger and Graeme
Bell, Ade Monsbourgh and others who worked together in the 'forties-Dave
Dallwitz can take credit for enabling Australian jazz to develop its
own unique idiom, laying the basis for the traditional jazz movement
which still flourishes strongly today.
