Tazarotene (Tazorac) is best considered a topical agent for psoriasis rather than a therapy of choice for acne vulgaris.

Tazarotene is the only topical agent available in the United States to be labeled as Pregnancy Category X: Proven fetal risks are present that outweigh any possible benefit.

Accordingly, if the clinician chooses to use this agent, pregnancy counseling and monitoring are useful. Because of this problem and the extreme expense of this agent, few patients are good candidates for tazarotene for acne.
