Acne Rosacea Treatment - Azaleic Acid Topical Therapy

Acne Treatment with Acid Agents

Azaleic Acid - Topical Acne Treatment

Azaleic acid (one brand name is Azalex) is a newer agent with antibacterial and antikeratinization effects. Whether this agent is superior to other acid products for acne treatment is not clear, as few comparative trials have been performed in acne vulgaris.

A useful side effect for acne patients is that azaleic acid can cause hypopigmentation, which some patients with postinflammatory hyperpigmentation appreciate.

Azaleic acid may play a role in reducing inflammatory papules as well. It is best applied once daily and sparingly. Azaleic acid may cause burning and stinging in people with sensitive skin. Commencing application conservatively and increasing use as the skin adapts is a common way to manage this situation.
