Minocycline and Doxyclcine - Systemic Acne Treatment

Minocycline and doxyclcine are tetracycline derivatives which are better tolerated acne treatments than tetracycline and erythromycin.

Minocycline and doxyclcine are often useful for the treatment of acne vulgaris in doses ranging from 100 ro 200 mg/d orally.

Minocycline (Minocin) may cause the uncommon possible side effects of blue-black pigmentation and vestibulitis. Extremely rarely, minocydine agents may produce pseudotumor cerebri.

Doxycycline (Monodox) is likely to be equally effective but is a potent photosensitizer. Both agents may induce candida vulvovaginitis. These agents should not be administered to pregnant women.
