Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole - Systemic Acne Treatment

Sulfa antibiotics such as Bactrim or Septra are often effective in the treatment of acne vulgaris but should be limited to use in cases resistant to other acne treatment antibiotics because of the potential side effects of photosensitivity and allergic skin reactions.

Teenagers sometimes have difficulty swallowing the large pills of the "DS" formulations. We usually employ this agent as one DS pill bid.

This acne treatment agent should not be administered to pregnant women. As with other systemic antibiotic agents, these agents may induce candida vulvovaginitis.
