In the playoffs for third and fourth positions Yaw Takyi (GHANA) beat Patrick Litunya (KENYA) 2/1. There was a lot of tension and excitement in the other playoff!
Jimoh Shaheed (NIGERIA) went into a quick lead by narrowly beating Femi Awowade (NIGERIA) by +3 and +4 respectively. Femi would have none of it and took the next two games decisively by margins of +66 and +93. By this time the tension in the playing area was tangible!
Jimoh started the final game with AUREOLA for 66. With CILNRSU on his rack Femi played CISLUNAR through the last "A"of AUREOLA!!! What a cracking start! Jimoh then reeled of another two quick sevens and increasingly it seemed he was getting out of reach. Despite going out with a bingo Femi could not get close enough to Jimoh who ended on 498 to Femi's 388! What a finish as spectators burst into spontaneous applause!
Well the trophy stays in Nigeria and other PANASA countries have to look to the next games in GHANA in 2000 to wrest the trophy from Nigeria.
So the final four positions were:
1. Jimoh Saheed
2. Femi Awowade
3. Yaw Takyi
4. Patrick Litunya
