Opening Ceremony, will have travelled almost 30,000km around Australia.
Some notable statistics about the relay include: -
- Travelling within 1 hours drive of 85% of Australia's Population
- Over 750 towns will see the torch, with 11,000 torchbearers,
who have been recognised by their local community, athletes
and Olympic sponsors
- There will be 187 lunch and overnight stops for the torch
So as you can see, the AMP Torch relay is quite a big event,
but it is also a once in a lifetime opportunity, so when the torch

The 2000 Sydney Olympic games are held in venues across the Sydney
metropolitan area and some even interstate (Canberra, Melbourne,
Adelaide and Brisbane) making it not only the Sydney games, but
the Australian games. An all round community effort. The majority
of the events are concentrated around the recently developed Homebush
Olympic venue located approximately 20 minutes drive west of the
city centre.
|
The majority of the venues are completely new and are considered
to be of a world-class calibre. The Sydney 2000 Olympic
Main Stadium is the largest outdoor venue in Olympic games
history and has a crowd capacity of 110 000 spectators.
IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch has been quoted to
have described the Olympic Aquatic Centre as being "the
best swimming pool I have seen in my life".
