The committee continues to discuss longer-term plans for supporting recorder playing in the community. This of course also involves support for our own members. Everyone will know about the library, but we do have some other services for members and groups, which may interest you:

o The Guild has $10m Public Liability cover. This applies to all events organised by the Guild and can apply to events organised by members and groups under the Guild umbrella, as long as you use our name when you set up the event. One member group has already used this facility – if it would be helpful to your group, do get in touch with Sue Lyons.

o As people attending the May weekend will know, the committee has just invested in a portable loudspeaker system with both a microphone and radio mike. This has all-risks insurance and can be booked by members for the nominal fee of $15 per session, to cover depreciation and insurance.

o We have a small number of wooden instruments for loan to students: two sopranos, two altos, a tenor and a bass. One of the sopranos is currently available, and the tenor and bass will be flying back to us at the end of term. Please get in touch if you have a student who would like to borrow one of these instruments (cost $30 p.a., pro rata, to cover insurance).

Also, we have just located an agency in South Australia which provides very low-cost computer software to voluntary organisations – this is DonorTec, which has negotiated arrangements with companies such as Microsoft for essentially free software. More on this next time.

On a wider front, we’re looking at encouraging summer schools at the universities, along with classes at community centres. For younger players, the Don Cowell Memorial Trust has agreed to contribute some support to recorder playing at eisteddfods... We’re on the move!
