Big Picture Maths 2012: Semester 1 - Budgeting and Tenancy

Activity pages for Semester 1 are found here

A copy of the term outline can be found here.

Tenancy generally suggests that you will be moving out of home. When this happens you will generally require an independent source of income so that you are able to pay the rent on the property you live in. To earn money you need a job and of course managing this money from week to week requires you to establish a personal budget.

Budgeting

  • Major purchases – e.g. mobile phone, furniture, computers
  • Managing personal finances
  • Use of spreadsheets e.g. Excel
  • Preparing for personal independence
  • Understanding hidden costs of financial plans
  • Financial rights and responsibilities
  • Insurance

Tenancy

  • Bills
  • Hidden costs
  • Setup costs
  • Moving out
  • Contents insurance
  • Legal contracts
  • Subsidies (e.g. Centrelink)
  • Accommodation types – e.g. alternative accommodations, government and preferential housing, emergency accommodation and support
  • Accommodation costs
  • Costs of sharing accommodation and responsibilities

Along with completing work in each of these areas, as set out on this web page, each lesson will require the completion of a maths skills activity. Initially this will require you to master to times-tables up to x12. Part of the test in Week 5 will be the inclusion of questions based on the use of your tables where you will not be allowed to use calculators.

Chapter 2.1 - Click here for the answers to 2.1
Chapter 2.2 - Click here for the answers to 2.2

In the Newton's Second Law practical that you are currently completing it will be essential that you calculate any uncertainty associated with your measurements. Uncertainty is initially judged by considering that the statement that the uncertainty of a measurement is equal to half the reading of the smallest division on the measuring device. cLc has further discussion on this topic. Section 1.5 of your text also has some discussion of this topic. The topics above, 1 - Measurement and Uncertainty and 2 - Dynamics Trolley and Graphing have many examples which will help you understand this concept. It is important to note that the term "error" is frequently used interchangably with the term "uncertainty". This is fine provided that you do not confuse the term "error" with "mistake". No amount of analysis can take into account "mistakes". Therefore you must take great care when you record any measurement that you make.

Building a New House - Ch 4 of textbook

Before you commence this section of your work you must have completed Activity #3 listed above. If this has been done then follow the directions as listed below.

As we are now dealing with building a new house your task firstly will be to visit the web site of a building company that is currrently building houses in the suburb of Macgregor in West Belconnen. Click on the following link to visit the Village Building Company's site.

Click here to download the complete instructions as to what to do next.

Once you have completed the activities on the sheet titled "Building a New House" you are to complete the following exercise. Your task is to determine the area of the block of land that the house sits on. To do this you will need to divide to block into a series of rectangles, triangles and trapeziums. Ask if you are not sure how this should be done. Remember a trapezium must have a one set of parallel sides. Once you have calculated the area of the land determine the area of the house. The value that you calculate will only be approximate. Use the measurements stated for each room as a guide but don't forget the corridores that are not specifically measured. Use your scale to determine the size of these areas. Once you have the area of the house calculate the percentage of the block that it occupies.

How Ecosystems Work and Human Impact- Canberra College

Essentially you are to complete the second part of Chapter 5 of your text. This includes Sections 5.6 to 5.8 inclusive.

Tasks:

Section 5.6: Depletion of stratospheric ozone: Read all of this section and answer questions 1, 2 and 9 on page 248. There are two web sites that you wil need to examine. The first is

http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/k-12/airplane/atmosi.html

Make sure that you change the units to "Metric" and choose data output as"Data"

NASAAtmApp

You really only need to move the plane up in 5000m intervals and then record the Static Temperature, Static Pressure and Density. Some further discussion can be found by clicking the link at the bottom of the page

NasaFurtherInfo

or by clicking here.

The other site to visit is,

http://www.windows2universe.org/earth/Atmosphere/layers.html

WintoUniv

Here you should click on the various links shown in the diagram above to learn more about each layer of the atmosphere.

Section 5.7: Urban Air Pollution: Read the section and answer Q2 on page 253. Research one case study of urban air pollution and list key features. Now visit the site,

http://www.environment.gov.au/

You should see the following. Click on the atmosphere link and work through the four links starting at Air Quality. As the data refers to Australia make very brief notes on each.
