|Filmed on location is Sydney, Australia, 'The Matrix' is
the latest blockbuster movie starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne
and Hugo Weaving. The production of 'The Matrix' consisted of conventional filming on
sound stages at Fox Studios in Sydney as well as two months of filming on Sydney's streets
and city rooftops.
For scenes taking place in an underground 'subway' station, a false enclosed station was built above ground at Sydney's Rozelle railway yards complete with escalators and 'underground' platform. To enable the all important moving train scenes to be shot, ex single deck intercity 'u-boat' car CF5025 was dramatically altered to look like an American subway train. This carriage, along with three other unmodified cars were then pushed and pulled through the 'underground' station by a diesel-electric 48 Class locomotive hired for the shooting.
At the completion of shooting, car CF5025 was sold and is now in private ownership in Sydney's western suburbs. The other three cars were returned to the State Rail Authority and remain part of the preserved heritage train fleet.
Below are a series of photos taken of CF5025 in early 1999. The car is currently mounted on stands but the bogies are stored nearby. The car retains the new front provided for the movie as well as the double sliding doors on the side.
