The Black Hawk team is currently busy preparing and delivering a new private boat to Cairns for the Heavy Tackle Marlin season.

The 2008 Season saw a very unusual run of fish for almost 6 weeks at Dangerous Reef- only 10nm out of Lincoln and more usually known as a snapper and whiting spot. One boat tagged 30+ fish on this spot early in March to show that there were very large numbers of fish present. A likely explanation is a large school followed a tow farm up Thorny Passage and found happy hunting at Dangerous- warm water and prolific bait. When the fish first appered early March they would slam any bait, however by April they were extremely cautious. While it certainly saved steaming 50nm to the Cabbage Patch, the "normal" run of fish did not appear until April when good numbers of fish were found at the Patch, even off Yorkes and KI. Good numbers were available on the western side of Eyre Peninsula at Rocky and Greenly from January, however did not come around the corner until much later.

The BlackHawk team capped off the 2007 tuna season on a high note with two world records- for American clients now resident in Costa Rica Gary and Sherrell Carter. Gary fought a 12.88 kg fish for three hours into the night for a new 2kg world record claim, breaking a 15+ year old record. Conditions were perfect with oily calm seas and low swell. BlackHawk chased the fish- often full throttle in reverse from near Liguano island to near the Cabbage Patch- approximately 10nm!

Sherrell had earlier caught a 14.3 kg fish on 3kg for a new womens world record claim. Sherrell accounted for her fish in about an hour. Unfortunately a horrendous weather forecast meant the rest of the weeks trip had to be cancelled. Although day one was very quiet by Port Lincoln standards and day two not that much better, Gary, Sherrell and their crewman Dave Cassar were impressed by the fishery.

2007 was a "different" season with few fish on our usual bread and butter spot the Cabbage Patch seamount. Fish were spread far and wide following bait. The season started later than 05 and 06 (although there were early fish further west) and thinned out earlier, however there were highlights. One Lincoln boat accounted for 116 fish in one day (the same day two other boats scored 70+) showing how frenzied the action can be.

The BlackHawk Team has been running the 40 Footer "Eagle" in Cairns for the Heavy Tackle Marlin Season (September-December) and mixing it with the big ones. Best fish was a nice one for Warwick Koster caught at Opal Reef on the 11th of November 2006. We'd never seen a fish so big and called it at 850, however some of Cairns most experienced charter skippers saw footage and fotos of it and said it'd go 1000lbs and who are we to disagree. See the fotos page for pic.
