Extract and assemble your notes on computer

Hints on editing, copying, pasting and storing notes

Information in electronic form is much easier to store and organize for review than printed material. You need to know how to take notes electronically by cutting and pasting and paraphrasing. The information will be more valuable later on if it sits within the computer rather than being buried in a hundred pages of printed material.

You can have a word-processing application such as Microsoft Word or Claris open at the same time that you are accessing information on the Internet via your browser. Useful information can be selected then copied (Ctrl+C) and pasted (Ctrl+V) straight onto a table using a word-processing application.

The good researcher designs a way to collect the most meaningful data, information and ideas in an easily searchable, compact location. Each time a student or team of students finds worthwhile information, the best parts should be saved in the following manner:

Source (Author,Title,Date,URL) .
Key question (s)  .
Main ideas / keywords  .
Abstract or summary .
If you are completing a research task in a group use a separate colour text for each team member so that each person’s contribution to the total effort can be monitored easily.
