Jamie Allen is one of Australia’s most outstanding young tenors and was educated at the State Conservatorium of Music in Sydney.

In 1994, Mr Allen joined the Opera Australia chorus and, in 1998, became a member of its Young Artists’ Development Programme. The highlights of 1998 included performing the roles of Benedick in Beatrice and Benedick and Malcolm in Macbeth.  His roles with the national company since that time have included Rodolfo in La Bohème, Jacquino in Fidelio, Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Italian Singer in Strauss’ Capriccio, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Nemorino in L’elisir d’Amore, Borsa in Rigoletto, Gastone in La Traviata, Van Huyssen in Batavia, Beppe in Pagliacci, Dancing Master in Ariadne auf Naxos, Kurt Vogelgesang in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor, the title role in Orpheus in the Underworld, Max in Der Freischütz, Flavio in Norma, Basilio/Curzio in The Marriage of Figaro and Nanki-Poo in The Mikado.

Mr Allen has extensive experience on the concert platform including Bruckner’s F Minor Mass and Te Deum, Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Requiem, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Haydn’s Creation.  He performed the tenor solos in Handel’s Messiah for the Christchurch City Choir, New Zealand, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor and Jonathan Mills’ Sandakan Threnody for the Sydney Symphony, Mozart’s Requiem for the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass for Sydney Philharmonia and Bach’s Mass in B Minor for The Melbourne Chorale.

In 1998, Jamie Allen was the major winner in the Australian Singing Competition’s Opera Awards.  He was awarded the inaugural Handa Opera Scholarship, the Armstrong-Martin Scholarship, the Foster Memorial Scholarship and the Queensland Performing Arts Trust Prize.  In 1999, he was awarded the Remy Martin Scholarship having been voted the outstanding young talent at Opera Australia.

Jamie Allen maintained his association with Opera Australia in 2006 with leading roles in Madama Butterfly, Jenufa, Batavia and The Marriage of Figaro – this was followed by major concert appearances in Sydney, Perth and New Zealand in 2007.  2008 saw Jamie Allen appear as soloist in both the Adelaide and Brisbane Festivals; he also took on the role of Steva in Jenufa for New Zealand Opera.
