Michael Black has degrees in Education, Performance and Musicology from Sydney Conservatorium and the University of NSW. He has received numerous awards and grants including a 2007 Churchill Fellowship, a 2005 Green Room Award, the Scarf Award, University of Sydney Staff Research Grant and 2000 Opera Foundation Bayreuth Scholarship.
Michael has performed in Australia and Asia with some Australia’s finest singers and visiting artists including the Royal String Quartet, Lisa Milne, the Belcea Quartet, the Kuss Quartet, Paul Whelan, Allan Clayton and Pamela Helen Stephen at the Perth International Music Festival, Wigmore Hall Touring Chamber Music Series, Sydney and Melbourne Festivals, the Brisbane Bienniale Festival, Utzon Room Series and NSW Art Gallery Series. Broadcasts for ABCFM include the Young Performers Series, Sunday Live and Treasury of Song Series. Television appearances include Australian Idol, The Kerry-Anne Kennerley Show, The Morning Show, A Current Affair and OperatunityOz.
For a number of years he was a lecturer in the Musicology and Vocal Departments at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. After a brief stint as a repetiteur, he is now Chorus Master with Opera Australia where he has prepared choruses for more than 80 operas and recordings of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (ABC Classics), Verdi’s Requiem (ABC Classics), Love for Three Oranges (Chandos) and Rusalka (Chandos) as well as the DVD of Pirates of Penzance (ABC Classics).
In recent years Michael has also worked with Cantillation on works such as Ein Deutches Requiem, The Andrea Bocelli Australian Tour, Rachmaninov's The Bells, Daphnis and Chloe, Gelmetti's Cantata della Vita, Rossini's Stabat Mater and the Shock of the New Concert Series.
