In Cairo we always stayed at the Pension Roma. A small boy named Valentine lived on the top floor with his parents who had fled Romania. On learning we were from Australia he exclaimed "I will go to your country! Please visit my room". The family lived on meagre UN rations, studied English in their room, and wandered the streets of Cairo waiting. It took Canberra eighteen months to reject their application. Eventually Canada took them.
