Plant Description
Botanical name: Tasmannia lanceolata
This is a shrub or small tree from the cooler regions of southern
Australia. It has shiny green leavesand purplish black berries.
Another species, Tasmannia stipitata, known as Dorrigo Pepper,
grows further north in NSW and is also used in the same way as
Mountain Pepper.
Usage
Both the leaves and the berries are used as spices, producing a pepper like flavour.
The leaves and berries can be dried and ground.
This is an important plant used by the Australian Bush Food Industry.
The product is used in both the fresh and dried states, and in
spice mixtures, sauces, and oils, to make gourmet dishes. While
much of the leaves and berries are wild harvested, some cultivation
of the trees is also taking place, mainly in Tasmania, Victoria, and South Australia.
