(Last day, 16th August)

Two years ago I travelled by car, plane and train to Darwin to visit Kris and Sean. There were a lot of advantages in travelling that way but there were some disadvantages too. Chiefly, one could not see a lot of the countryside when flying or when in a train at night. Secondly, one could not deviate from the scheduled route nor stop to inspect some feature of interest.

So this time, with Matt as travelling companion and co-driver, my plan is to travel the whole way by car through some of the iconic outback areas of Australia and to see as much as we can, within the limits of sticking to a timetable of bookings that have been made. The colours of the buttons have been chosen to reflect those of so much of the outback.

Here is our plan . . .

On the map, alternate days’ travel is shown in red or green. The little thumbtacks indicate the overnight stops. The mauve line indicates the coach trip on 9th August (though I have to admit it looks blue on some monitors).

Four States: Matt and I both live in New South Wales (NSW), he at Gladesville (a suburb of Sydney), me at Woonona (a suburb of Wollongong). Our road trip takes us through Queensland (Qld), the Northern Territory (NT) and South Australia (SA) before returning to New South Wales. For UK viewers, States are like counties, but much, much bigger. Our smallest State, Tasmania, is larger than the whole of England.

A few statistics to indicate the scope of our road trip . . .
