One of the group, Peter McGee suggested that they build a small 12ft model. This they did. Their first project was a little fabric balloon, which they named De Rozier.

De Rozier was theAerostat Societies first balloon. It could barely lift its own weight. Here it is being demonstrated at the University of NSW. ]

After the demonstration, the group received some support, more members, and by each donating the equivalent of about $50.00, they were able to start construction of a  32 ft diameter balloon. This would be made out of 1mil Mylar (polyester film).

Large enough to lift one person.

It was June 1963, and they named it "Archimedes"
