North of Western Australia.
The Kimberley's. The Pilbara. The
Hamersley Range area. the Bungle Bungles.
After the Canning Stock Route.
These beautiful wildflowers (Parakeelya) growing
out of bare red sand, near Newman.
5/8/95, the Bungle Bungles are every bit
as spectacular as the tourist brochures say!
A fun 4 x 4 drive in, good camping, good
walks and spectacular scenery. We walked into Cathedral Gorge, as spectacular
place as you could ever see!
A helicopter flight is well worthwhile, take a
big supply of film!
After three days in this wonderful
place we dragged ourselves away to Kunanurra and the Ord River area.
It's always good to get to civilization after so much solitude.
Here we met up with Les and June again, and Gordon
and Shirley joined us.
Hilde and I had been here before, but we enjoyed
seeing all the sights again, Lake Argyle is superb.
We saw the Durack homestead, Dead Horse Springs,
Roy's Retreat, The Melon Farm, The Argyle Diamond mine and had a night
at the speedway. we also walked the beautiful Hidden Valley.
Parrys Lagoon, what bird life! Brolgas, Burdekin
Ducks, Geese, Jesus Birds, and a variety of water Hen, Scrub Turkey, Ibis,
Rainbow Bee Eater, Jabiru and many we couldn't identify.
On to Wyndham and its crocodile farm, the spectacular
Five Rivers Lookout over the Cambridge Gulf.
The King River Road, past the prison tree, (a
big hollow Boab tree where the police used to keep their prisoners overnight
on the way back to town).
We camped on the Pentecost River, and caught
a couple of small Barramundi, while keeping our eyes out for crock's.
Then on to El Questro station, and a good river
campsite, we refreshed ourselves in the warm Zebadee Spring, walked to
the Pentacost Gorge, and spent a relaxing afternoon on the Chamberlain
Gorge in a hire boat.
We found the beautiful Emma Gorge with it's lush
grass an oasis! Good walks and swimming.
The Gibb River road had been recently graded,
and didn't live up to it's bad reputation.
Travelling West we looked in at Bluey O'Malleys
Water Hole, Jacks Water hole, the Durack River homestead "Ellenbreae",
and camped on Campbell Creek.
North to Kalumburu, passing Drysdale station,
King Edward River station, Theda station, and crossed the Carson River.
We passed through the big aboriginal community
Kalumburu, and about 20 clicks North on a rough track came to our destination,
McGowans Island. (actually a beach) This is a little piece of heaven on
Deep Bay, in Napier Broome Bay, run by John, a very personable full blood
aboriginal.
This has to be the worlds greatest fishing! You
have to stand behind a tree to bait your hook!
John's offsider George will take you out for
about five hours, for $10, and guarantee you fish! they vary from good
pan size varieties, to 50 pound Spanish Mackerel.
You will never see better sunsets!
After four days in paradise our party split again,
Gavan and Robin joined hilde and I as we headed for the remote Mitchell
Plateau. this trip was a testing drive, the track varied from good to very
rough, a flash tropical storm (in the dry season) turned the track to instant
mud, interesting on the steep bits!
The bird life abounds, including a pair of Bustards.
We did a beautiful hour and a half, hot, walk in to the exquisite Mitchell
Falls, it must be great to see in the wet season!
