'Digger's Darling' was the name given to the Owen Gun by the servicemen who used it in the WW2, Malayan and Vietnam Conflicts and saving 1,000's of Australian soldiers lives. What was special about the Owen Gun? It could be used in mud, water, sand and even wind. Other machine guns failed when used in these conditions, AND it was invented by a young Wollongong man named Evelyn Owen and produced at the Lysaghts factory at Port Kembla. 'Digger's Darling' tells of Evo Owens struggle with the might of the Australian Army who thought it was a "Gangster Gun". Told through songs of the era, music hall, Movietone news clips, sirens and personal stories, the play brings this important local history story to life.

In 2008, to celebrate IPAC’s 20th year, Merrigong commissioned two local playwrights, Van Badham and Simon Luckhurst, and two other exciting talents, Mary Rachel Brown and Marcel Dorney, to each write a short play with the very simple premise – tell us a story about Wollongong. In a classic case of art imitating life, they came back with tales delving deep into Wollongong’s rich history and colourful social fabric. From miners’ strikes to dog racing, drug dealing to dodgy development deals, these four plays about Wollongong cover it all! Regular Merrigong patrons will be familiar with the work of all four writers. Van Badham’s Camarilla was seen at Merrigong in 2006, Marcel Dorney’s Thieves Like Us in 2008 and Mary Rachel Brown and Simon Luckhurst were the first two writers featured in Merrigong’s inaugural RUFF! New Works in Progress initiative in 2008. All four plays will be realised as one night of theatre, connected through the four actors working across all four scripts, with the set, lighting and AV serving to unite the stories into one world - the world of 4 Plays About Wollongong.
