WHAT OTHER SPECIAL GROUPS? Shrub & Tree Growers |
Shrub & Tree Growers Group of NSW The Shrub and Tree Growers Group is a special interest group of the Nursery & Garden Industry NSW. Members are mostly shrub and tree growers, though membership is definitely not restricted to growers of such. Current members also grow rockeries, herbs, perennials and tubestock, and include potting mix manufacturers, wholesale markets and retail nursery operators. Meetings are held bi-monthly on the Wednesday night following the NIAN Rouse Hill market day in the NIAN Boardroom. With 32 current members the group qualifies for 2 representatives on the NIAN Council which enables us to keep our members informed about NIAN activities and directly express our opinions and make suggestions. The group has assisted NIAN directly by helping sponsor the Sydney Expo's dinners, as well as the 1996 and 1999 State Conferences. As membership fees of the group is a modest $50 per year, most of our funds are raised by royalties from the groups promotional labels. We currently promote a Shrub or Tree of the Year annually and have also released a range of promotional labels for plants we feel warrant a NEW label and are worthy of being recommended by the group. Current labels include Pandora Snowballs, Reinwardtia Golden Dollar Bush, Iboza riparia Nutmeg Busy, Fraxinus griffithii - 'Tree of the Year 1995', Rosemary Pink Remembrance - 'Shrub of the Year 1994', Murraya paniculata, Westringia Sea Mist, Libertia paniculata - 'Shrub of the Year 1997' Gardenia's florida, radicans and magnifica, Michelia figo, Raphiolepis Springtime, Pieris Temple Bells - 'Shrub of the Year 1999'. These labels are either restricted to, and or cheaper for group members. We are currently looking at ways to promote our group within the Nursery Industry and make retailers more aware of the plants we promote. We welcome visitors to our meetings and encourage new members as we feel fresh input is essential to a strong active group.
