James Abernethy was born in 1855 in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. By 1901 he was living with his wife Annie Clark, at 21 Belmont Rd., Holywood, Belfast. (1901 Census: page 1, page 2 page 3, page 4) In 1907 he resided at Ormiston Lodge, Strandtown, Belfast. This is near Clonlee Drive, Bloomfield, where his daughter Annie (Anne) Florence later lived.

He was a gardener and probably illiterate as his will is signed with a cross (X). He died on 27 August, 1907, at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. Probate was granted on 25 September, 1907 to his wife, of 289 9s 5d. James is buried in Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast (Section E4, Class 4, Number 103)

Annie Clark was born in County Meath in 1864, married James and adopted Annie Florence Abernethy (1889-1953). The 1901 census has Annie the only child, living with her parents. There is reference to an Isabella Clark, living (or staying) with Thomas and Margret Wilkinson in 1901 (census) and their son John, whom Annie jnr. subsequently married. Were they related? After James' death in 1907, the 1911 census has Annie living with her daughter and son-in-law (Annie Florence and John Wilkinson) and their young children - John Abernethy Wilkinson and Anna Mary (Maisie) Wilkinson - at 10 Ulsterdale Street, Belfast, where she presumably passed, sometime before 1919 when the Wilkinsons moved to Fanhill, Ballyrussell (Dundonald).

The photo (left) shows James Abernethy and Dolly standing and wife Annie and daughter Annie in front. Photographer was probably Annie's husband John Wilkinson (shadow cast). Annie Florence and John Wilkinson were married just 5 months when James died. The photo may have been taken around that time at 10 Ulsterdale Street, Belfast. Was Dolly related to the Clarks perhaps a sister to Isabella mentioned above?
