Family Group Record for James ABERNETHY & Annie CLARKE

James Abernethy was born in 1855 in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. By 1901 he was living with his wife Annie Clarke, at 21 Belmont Rd., Holywood, Belfast. (1901 Census: page 1, page 2 page 3, page 4) In 1907 he resided at Ormiston Lodge, Strandtown, Belfast. This is near Clonlee Drive, Bloomfield, where his daughter Anne (Anna) Florence later lived.

He was a gardener and probably illiterate as his will is signed with a cross (X). He died on 27 August, 1907, at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. Probate was granted on 25 September, 1907 to his wife, of 289 9s 5d. James is buried in Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast (Section E4, Class 4, Number 103)

Annie Clarke was born in County Meath in 1864, married James and had 2 chldren: Anne Florence Abernethy and "Dolly" Abernethy. After James' death , the 1911 census has Annie living with her daughter and son-in-law (Anne Florence (Anna) and John Wilkinson) and their young children - John Abernethy Wilkinson and Anna Mary (Maisie) Wilkinson - at 10 Ulsterdale Street, Belfast.

The photo (left) shows James Abernethy and Dolly standing and wife Annie and daughter Anne in front. Photographer was probably Anne's husband John Wilkinson (shadow cast). Anne Florence and John Wilkinson were married just 6 months when James died. The photo may have been taken around that time at 10 Ulsterdale Street, Belfast.

Will Text:

This is the last will and testament of me, James Abernethy, of Ormiston Lodge, Belfast, Gardener. Hereby revoking all former wills at any time heretofore made by me. I give, devise and bequeath all my property, real and personal of whatever kind to my wife Annie Abernethy for her own absolute use and benefit. And I appoint her sole executrix of this my will as witness my hand this twenty first day of August one thousand nine hundred and seven.________ James {X his mark} Abernethy __________ Signed and acknowledged by the testator James Abernethy, as his last will in presence of us both, being present at the same time, who have in his presence and in presence of each other, hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses, same having been first truly read to him, + he fully understanding the same. __________Charles W.
