(pointer88) The battle fittness test when I was in the Army were 10 miles carrying 30lb in 2 hours. Then it was changed to 1.5 miles in 15mins followed by 1.5 miles in about 10mins(depending on age). My advice would be run at least 3 miles 6 days a week, wearing some form of boots(not trainers). The army boots are quite heavy so get used to running in them. The Marines are all about running/marching with heavy rucksacks. HTH if you need more i will try to answer. Faze Re: Basic answer Posted By: JeffB Date: 21 Jan 2001, 05:17 In Response To: Basic answer (Faze) I was in the US Military (22 years) and our fitness tests were *never* as tough as yours, the American Military is "wimpy" in that regard compared to the UK Military. At least in the "Strategic Units" minimum standards were all that was required - some of the Tactical Units had *additional*, tougher requirements. One thing that can help - Faze's advice will probably *guarantee success*; you can modify it a bit, this is something I used to do in Tactical Units: If you can find them, they make 2.5 and 5 pound "sandbag/straps" that belt around your ankles with velcro. If you can't find them, you can improvise. WORK UP SLOWLY and carefully, (low weight at first - short distance - slow pace) otherwise you will injure yourself. THEN start wearing packpacks, gradually increasing the weight. If you do this right you will eventually be like a walking super tree on steroids that can trod thru mountains, part seas, and intimidate your average motorcycle gang quite easily. > The battle fittness test when I was in the Army were > 10 miles carrying 30lb in 2 hours. > Then it was changed to 1.5 miles in 15mins followed by > 1.5 miles in about 10mins(depending on age). > My advice would be run at least 3 miles 6 days a week, > wearing some form of boots(not trainers). > The army boots are quite heavy so get used to running > in them. > The Marines are all about running/marching with heavy > rucksacks. > HTH if you need more i will try to answer. > Faze heres what i can do.... The secret is running in boots, then start to carry weights when running. You should aim to be able to run 6-8 miles by the time you join. Also if you have access to gym start to work on your upperbody strenght. If you are above average fitness when you join you should have no problems. One word of warning, get yourself a trade in the marines. DONT FORGET THERE IS NO CALL FOR MARINES IN CIVVY STREET. I was(and still am) highly qualified in photography and I was still unemployed fo 18 months when I left the Army. If you need any more info I will try to help. Faze Re: need info on UK military! (pointer88) Hellenic Army 35th wing special forces (Cypriot detachment) 2 years of hell on yellow alert only. our activites only at night around a full moon we get 3 days leave to town! 2 times day and night : 126 steps in one miniute taken up to max 135 steps this will cover +/- 6 klm an hour depending on terain. average duration 2 hours each includes half pack 10kg plus full battle equipment. Once a week 30 klm recons as above includes 15kg full pack once a month 115 klm non stop cycle hit target, destoy and return as above once every 6 months hell week no food or water live off land cover around 300 klm, the list goes on! my advice! start at 110 steps (then slowly increase to 135 step in a month) in one minute for one hour in a gym enviorment and incline the machine at 10% gradually (to 20% at the months end) only up then one hour latter repeat but with a decline angle of 10% gradually to 20%, start with runining shoes for 10 days daily, then move to army boots issued for 3 weeks this will get you in walking shape. Then start with heavy clothes, then with 2kg weights on leg and arms especially on the belt (take this up to 10kg). remember your not going to be wearing a sexy t-shirt doing all this. It is the armed forces so you should be wearing heavy clothes thats more real weight and carring a weapon in your hands in actual traning this weight is another 4 kg plus 300 shells of ammo. So latter in the gym carry a a short bar with such a weight. you will do fine! ;-) p.s. achive 100 very good sit-ups and chin-ups every morning blueboy
