Intro

16 riders took part in our latest group ride. Welcome to the new riders to our group. I am sure you enjoyed your day. What beautiful roads these were north of Brisbane! I think everyone will agree that the one way section on Obi Obi Rd and the glorious Peachester stretch were the highlight of the day. (Who would like to set up a road-block this weekend and keep the Peachester road just for our own private use for a day??) The drizzle that we encountered on our first leg of the trip soon cleared to a beautiful (and comparatively warm) winter’s day. No accidents to report again, which always makes for a great ride, (although we did ‘lose’ two riders- me included!) Yes, guys- I have put in my request for a GPS for Christmas.

Route

Dayboro through to Woodford. Woodford to Kenilworth. Kenilworth to Mapleton. Mapleton to Woodford. Woodford to Dayboro.

1st Leg- Dayboro to Woodford

A group of 14 riders met at the Dayboro swimming pool carpark and set off on a familiar trek up Mt Mee. The drizzle began just before we started our trip, but was never more than slightly annoying and cleared just after our first stop.Once again there were no accidents and no police to be seen on the mountain despite recent reports of an increased police presence in the area. After a leisurely first leg we stopped at the Woodford Bakery for a rest and refreshment break, and met up with Red N Red, who joined up with us until after lunch. Great to see you both again. (It was nice to have one other girl with us for part of the trip!)

2nd Leg- Woodford to Kenilworth

Absolutely gorgeous roads for this leg of the trip! The smooth bitumen and fast sweeping roads were a stark contrast to the first leg of the journey. If only all of the bitumen in Queensland was like this we would have so much more choice in planning our rides. Our stop at Little Yabba Creek at Kenilworth was beautiful (as you will see by the pictures.) A fantastic little rest stop with some beautiful scenery.

3rd Leg- Kenilworth to Mapleton

Once again, the pace of our ride changed during this leg. After leaving our rest stop at Little Yabba Creek, we headed onto the Eumundi- Kenilworth Road. This road had some absolutely amazing hairpin corners that were a fantastic prelude to Obi Obi Road. I must say that the sealed road heading up Obi Obi is MUCH more fun than the badly rutted dirt road leading down. I was thankful to our ride planners that we only did bitumen for this trip! (As you start to head up Obi Obi Rd the dirt road heading down can be seen on the right.) Apart from the great road surface and spine-tingling twists this stretch of road is famous among bikers for the fact that it is one-way!!! A great stretch for pushing your ability without the worry of oncoming traffic. The 20kmh hairpin certainly had me literally on the edge of my seat! Have to practice that one again I think! After the adrenaline of Obi Obi we headed to the Mapleton Hotel for lunch (well, most of us did- you will need to get a report on the food from the people who didn’t get lost, as I did a recce on my own to check out part of the next leg! J )

4th Leg- Mapleton to Woodford

This part of journey had some of the most beautiful views of the north coast. It is a real tourist mecca, so it is fairly inevitable to get stuck behind traffic. (Although the slower ride provides a good chance to take in the magnificent views.) It feels as though you are on top of the world looking out to Baroon Dam and the Pacific Ocean on the Sunshine Coast. It was lovely just to take it all in and let lunch settle before heading in through Beerwah, past the Glasshouse Mountains, and stopping once again at the Woodford Bakery.

5th Leg- Woodford to Dayboro

Everyone was getting tired and ready for a Sunday afternoon siesta by this stage. Our friends from the southern and western side of Brisbane still had quite a long trip home, so we headed back up Mt Mee. The twisties up the northern side of the mountain are always great fun, and there was very little traffic at this time of day which added to the enjoyment. We had our traditional Mt Mee Lookout photo shoot before heading south down the mountain and each on our separate journeys home. All riders reported in safe and well, and even our lost riders were accounted for in the end.

Conclusion

I am sure that all riders would love to do this loop again. It certainly is one of my favourite routes. Thank-you to all who participated to make for a wonderful day, and particularly our friends who travelled longer distances from the southern and western suburbs. (It was nice to have you on northern turf! J ) As, I said before- welcome to our new riders. I am sure you enjoyed the company of our fantastic group of friends. To me the friendship is as good as the riding!

That’s all from your intrepid and directionless ride reporter for now, looking forward to the next one…….
