Club Research Interests

Our membership's interests cover the many varied areas of card collecting.  Some members of course have a leaning towards items of regional interest especially the postcards of Brisbane and Queensland.  Lists of publishers of Queensland views and their postcard output are being collated as an ongoing project.  I have scanned a few of these cards to our Gallery Site.

Some of the postcard series currently being researched include:

Early Postcard Publishers
. Coloured Shell Series
. E.D. & Co and EDCO (Edward's Dunlop & Co)
. Intelligence and Tourism Bureau
. White Series
. Retrac (Carter spelt backwards!)
. Comet Series
. McDonnell Series
. Murray's Studios of Brisbane and Gympie
. postcards published by and based on photographs by Brisbane photographers P.C. Poulsen & Thomas Mathewson
. postcards published by Warwick photographer M.H. Poulsen
. postcards published by Barton of Warwick
. postcards of Brisbane suburbs (Toowong has been covered in detail)
. Taylor series (produced by Ipswich based photographers Benjamin & Laura Taylor)

. David Johnson has assembled lists of the extensive postcard output of Tucks with extensive help from the Tuck's collectors circle in the UK

Modern Publishers
. Sidues Series (Sydney Hughes)
. Samuel Lee (ICP) of Stanthorpe
. Avant Cards (free advertising cards)

Enquiries about postcards, cigarette and trade cards relating to Queensland are particularly welcome.

Reference Literature

Postcards

The only major book on Australian postcards is "Picture Postcards in Australia 1898-1920" by David Cook, publ. by Pioneer Design Studio, Victoria, 1986 (now out of print). This is an invaluable and thoroughly researched work which is essential to anyone collecting postcards published in Australia.

"Early Australian Postcards" published by View Publications is a smaller 54pp. introduction to the subject of Australian postcards.

Three useful catalogues have been published but no new editions have appeared in over 20 years.

"Collecting Australian Postcards", by Nick Vukovic, 1st edition 1983.

"Australian Postcard Catalogue", by Paul Kornan, publ. by Paul Kornan, West Melbourne, 1st edition, 1984.
"Australian Postcard Catalogue 1987", by Paul Kornan, publ. by Paul Kornan, West Melbourne, 2nd edition, 1987.

One of the best periodicals on postcard collecting is Picture Postcard Monthly published in Nottingham, England by Brian and Mary Lund.   Aside from the journals of the individual state collector's societies there is no regular publication dealing with card collecting in Australia.

Cigarette and Trade Cards

The Australian and New Zealand Index publ. by The Cartophilic Society of Great Britain in assoc. with the Australian Cartophilic Society and The Cartophilic Society of New Zealand, 1983 (RB30).

The Australian and New Zealand Index (Part II) publ. by The Cartophilic Society of Great Britain in assoc. with the Australian Cartophilic Society and The Cartophilic Society of New Zealand, 1993 (RB33).

Cigarette Cards.  Australian Issues and Values by Dion Skinner, 1983 lists 12,000 cards issued in Australia from 1895-1934 in set series.
