Stanfell Clowes and his wife Elizabeth sailed from London/Plymouth on 31 July 1850 and arrived at Port Natal (Durban), South Africa on 10 October 1850. There only son John Stanfell Clowes was born there the following year. The family returned to England where Stanfell Clowes died in 1856 when his son was just five. John lived with his mother at 59 Doughty St, Saint Pancras, London and at the age of 19 he emigrated to Brisbane aboard the "Margaret Falconer" arriving 3 June 1869. John Clowes became the first head teacher at Normanby School (now Mutdapilly State School) that opened on 27 April 1874 and he served at the school until 31 July 1876. He then joined photographer George Samuel McClelland in a short lived partnership with a studio in Kent St, Maryborough for the rest of 1876. For the next two years John Clowes and McClelland operated separate studios in the town.
