| Stanfell
Clowes and his wife Elizabeth sailed from London/Plymouth on 31 July 1850
and arrived at Port Natal (Durban), South Africa on 10 October 1850. There
only son John Stanfell Clowes was born there the following year. The family
returned to England where Stanfell Clowes died in 1856 when his son was
just five. John lived with his mother at 59 Doughty St, Saint Pancras,
London and at the age of 19 he emigrated to Brisbane aboard the "Margaret
Falconer" arriving 3 June 1869. John Clowes became the first head teacher
at Normanby School (now Mutdapilly State School) that opened on 27 April
1874 and he served at the school until 31 July 1876. He then joined photographer
George Samuel McClelland in a short lived partnership with a studio in
Kent St, Maryborough for the rest of 1876. For the next two years John
Clowes and McClelland operated separate studios in the town. "The Shadow is all we can preserve from the Grave." PHOTOGRAPHY M'CLELLAND & CLOWES. Will immediately commence business in their NEW GALLERY NEXT THE QUEEN'S HOTEL, Kent Street, The greatest care will be taken that no Photograph leaves the establishment unless approved of.
