The ANDREWS Family of Axbridge, Cheddar & Cleeve, Somerset (with branches in Cornwall, Australia and the USA)

This page was created 9 December 2002 and last updated 10 Dec 2019

The Andrews family have roots in Axbridge going back to the early 17th century. John Andrews was mayor of the town and some subsequent generation moved to nearby Cheddar with Richard and Aaron being christian names perpetuated through the generations. Family members were engaged mostly in farm labouring. The Axbridge and Cheddar areas were largely given over to dairy farming, cheese production and the growing of strawberries. The world famous Cheddar Caves were not discovered until the Victorian era. Cheddar village opened up for tourism with the arrival of railway in 1869 and also became a centre for clothing and footwear manufacture.

My branch of the Andrews family came to Australia over 100 years ago when my great uncle Frank Andrews Perry arrived in Sydney aboard the Malwa on 29 December 1911. My grandfather Hubert Andrews Perry followed him in 1914 aboard the Commonwealth that arrived 9 December. Their mother Florence Andrews grew up in Redhill near Wrington in her father's pub The Rising Sun and she married gamekeeper Arthur Perry, the family moving to Cornwall.

I welcome contact from anyone related to this family and anyone with Andrews ancestors in the region of Axbridge, Cheddar or Cleeve  - Marcel Safier
