The Porteous name is found fairly commonly throughout the south of Scotland.  Early recorded references to the name include the family of Porteous of Hawkshaw in Peebleshire. Glen Potwis held the lands of Glenkirk in 1478-84. John Portewis had a charter in 1513 of the lands of Glenkirk and Quhitslaid. Sir William Portus was the chaplain in the parish church of S. Bega of Kilbucho in 1550. 

I have Porteous ancestry in two lines. One line of my ancestors were farmers in the parish of Lamington in Lanarkshire, at least back to the early eighteenth century. The Lamington parish registers which date from 1645 record a Patrick Porteous having sons John in 1647 and William in 1649. Rolland Porteous married Mary Baillie in nearby Wiston & Roberton parish in 1691 and they had a son John baptised at Lamington in 1696 and a daughter Janet there at Harlside in 1698.  As the Wiston & Roberton parish records only exist from 1689 details of Rolland's origins are not recorded. 

Other early Lamington residents include John Porteous who married Marion Tod on 23 January 1697.  No children of this marriage are recorded. William Porteous from Wigtown parish married Christian Moffat of Lamington there on 26 January 1698 although their children were all baptised in Wiston & Roberton.  James Ramsay married Janet Porteous at Lamington on 15 June 1702. 

Thomas Porteous and his wife Jean Forrest lived in Cold Chapel, Lamington and had four daughters baptised: Jean (17 May 1749), Janet and Margret (both on 3 May 1752) and Barbra (6 June 1756).  A baptism record for Thomas has not been located so he cannot be directly linked to the previous generations of Porteous families in the Lamington area although he could be a sibling to James, the only son of James Porteous who was baptised at Lamington in 1721. As people tended not to move far from where they lived in the 18th century a connection to these earlier Porteous' seems likely.  The graves of Thomas and his wife Jean are in the Lamington churchyard cemetery but the inscribed dates are indecipherable. 

Thomas's daughter Janet Porteous went on to marry Adam Watson, a wright in Lamington during 1787 and their story appears in the account of the Watson family (see the WATSONs of Lamington, Lanarkshire site).

My other Porteous line concerns Jean Porteous of Lamington who may have been a sister to Thomas.  Jean married Robert McMorran at Crawfordjohn in 1746.  They lived at Netherhill and had the following children baptised: Mary (1747), a female, name unreadable in the register (1748), Elizabeth (1750), a son probably Robert (1751), Agnes (1753), William (1755), Jean (1759) and John (1761).  Another Robert McMorran, grandson of the above Robert, married in 1810 at Crawfordjohn to  Elizabeth Watson the daughter of Adam Watson and Janet Porteous mentioned above (see the McMORRANs of Crawfordjohn, Lanakshire site). 

Robert and Elizabeth McMorran of Crawfordjohn were my great-great-great grandparents.
