Parish registers reveal events for McMorrans back to
the late 17th century, but no regular pattern of residence emerges until
the 1830s in Girvan with the arrival of William McMorran of Minnigaff in
Kirkcudbright who set himself up as a bookbinder by 1837. He married a
Kirkoswald girl Jean Wright but only one of their children John was to
have any family and they eventually emigrated to Canada. William's sister
Mary followed him to Girvan and married Hugh McCaa there in 1849. There
only child James died aged 18 in 1860 and Mary died the following year.
Margaret Lanckton had two McMorran sons out of wedlock in 1849 and 1852,
just prior to William McMorran's marriage. They both resided in Hamilton
St, Girvan so it is quite likely he was the father. Her next two sons who
initially had different surnames changed their names to McMorran.
