A small change with a significant impact on the all- important combustion performance is the high aspect design of the piston. To reduce dead volume around the crown the top ring has been placed higher than usual. This visibly cuts down the volume of unburnt waste gases. It also increases combustion efficiency.
So does a new head gasket. This safe metal gasket is 70% thinner than those conventionally used so far. The thinner gasket concentrates combustion pressure even more.
To handle the better combustion and higher thermal loads we have designed a two-tier cooling chamber. This gives direct cooling to the ring area.
The fuel-air mixture that hits the combustion chamber has to be near ideal for most effective combustion and the greatest torque. The computer designed apertures in the intake port of the TNE give swirl characteristics that ensure this. Raw gas is virtually excluded, meaning less smoke and smell during low load operation.
Nobody can make fuel injection equipment as well as the people who make diesel engines. Yanmar's unique role as an FIE developer means the heart of the TNE is matched precisely with the rest of the system. Such close coordination of parts means that every drop of fuel serves the combustion process, leaves no waste. You also get the asset of having one source for all spares.
Injection perfection is the result of a system which atomizes and mixes fuel at extremely high pressures. It cuts out noxious emissions at both high and low load, slashing raw gas exhaust.
Spot-on pump performance controls fuel injection over the whole speed range. Its success in any type of drive duty is due to a new governor mechanism and an enlarged plunger. Total stability is maintained at all load demands.
Added piston stability comes from a steel strut inserted in the piston. This reduces expansion of the alloy and neutralizes expansion disparity. The result is finer tolerances, reduced blow-by gas and less piston slap which is even further reduced by an offset piston pin that cuts down on centrifugal forces.
At Yanmar we don't simply put together any crankshaft and piston rods. Because every crankshaft has its own tolerance characteristics, each one is carefully mated to like rods. This helps minimize bearing clearances and create the smoothest stroke action.
Specially designed gear teeth have a newly designed 'roll-off' surface profile. There's almost no clash, no noise and no backlash.
Flywheel noises, usually created by air turbulence, are sealed inside the flywheel housing by a special flange forged into the housing.
