About the Finnish Lapphund The Finnish Lapphund or the Suomenlapinkoira as it is known in its home country Finland, is a medium sized dog of 49cm (19 inches) and bitches a little bit smaller. He is a very old breed of dog and over the years gradually changed from guarding and hunting to herding. In his home country the Sami people (Laplanders) use him for working the Reindeer herds. As a working dog he is an active dog and loves to exercise, he is also a companion dog. He can also be noisy if not controlled. He does not need acres to live in, but if in a unit of flat he must be exercised on a regular basis. He will get on well with other animals if introduced to them properly and patiently The Lapphund is a double coated dog with a thick under coat and longer guard hairs protruding out from amongst the undercoat. This coat protects the dog from the cold and the heat. The coat does need a reasonable amount of grooming especially as a youngster while it changes from its puppy coat to the adult coat. The Lapphund is a dog that likes your attention and if he is ignored will seek you out for a cuddle and a pat. They are an easy breed to train and do extremely well in Obedience and Agility and Herding. Here in Australia we have dogs with their Companion Dog, Jumping Dog and Herding Instinct Titles as well as Championship titles. This is a breed that will entice you and lure you to his ways. You will fall in love with him and he will try to control you, you have to be strong willed with him in his training and be in control. |
