June 1998
Folding of Gammamen
The second men's team of the Doncaster Handball Club, the Gammamen, have folded their team during June due to major injury worries. Too many players are out injured, leaving the Gammamen short. All future games will be forfaited and will wield a 5:0 result for the opponent team.
Where possible, the remaining healthy players are absorbed by the Omegamen, which themselves haven't got players in abundance. The positive aspect of this development is that the Omegamen should gain in skill and strenght, hopefully being able to challenge powerhouse sites such as City of Melbourne Redbacks in the upcoming return match.
State Handball Team Plays International Guest Clubs
Some players of the Doncaster Handball Club were representing the State of Victoria during two international friendly matches against Wakunaga (Japan) and SZVSE (Hungary) on the weekend of 27th / 28th June 1998. As was to be expected, the valiant Victorians were beaten clearly by both guest teams. The Japanese and Hungarians are professional Handball players, whereas all the Victorian representatives are part-timers only.
However, the experience was a great one, and such challenges can only help improving the level of Handball in Australia overall. This is particularly important since Australia will be participating in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
