March 1999
Lightning Premiership (Pre-Season) Competition
The lightning premiership was played for the first time this year, in a "every team plays each other once" format. This was a good way of actually getting the teams ready and prepared for what is shaping up as one of the toughest and closest Premiership League Competitions in history.
Doncaster Men missed out on the trophy by percentage only, coming second to Bundoora. It came down to the last match, where Bundoora had to beat Carlton by 6 goals or more to steal the title from Doncaster. Unfortunately for us, Bundoora absolutely demolished Carlton, preventing what would have been a well deserved Premiership title for Doncaster.
The Alpha Girls however once again blitzed the competition and cruised to victory, winning their pre-season competition solidly. Once again, congratulations, girls. => Get the detailed results here.
Retirements, Changes And New Recruits
Prior to this season commencing the Doncaster Men had to do some serious recruiting and team rebuilding, as a number of key players had retired at the end of the previous season. We thank Tony Christensen and Phil Craig for their efforts on and off the court in the past few years, and wish them well in their future endeavours.
Also, one of our top scoreres, Travis Hardman, will not play for Doncaster this year as he has been called into the Australian National team and will be based in Sydney. Congratulations, Travis, and I hope you will make the Olympic Team.
We welcome the following new recruits to Doncaster: Matthew Francis, David Stevenson, Joseph Warda, Davor Vilusic. The guys have already shown that they will be valuable team players and will pull their weight.
