Grand Final Match Review
- Omegamen Once
again, for the third time in as many years, the Omegamen found themselves in a State Cup
Grand Final playing the Melbourne Redbacks. Having lost the two previous years
everybody felt that it was about time for Doncaster to go all the way and win the Cup.
However,
the match got off to a bad start, with the Redbacks going 5:0 up before the Omegamen
started to find their rythm and actually score goals of their own. Doncaster then
steadied the game, and in fact closed the gap down to three goals by half time. It
was still anyone's game, and after the drinks Doncaster came out firing.
The
second half started off well for Doncaster, and the margin was further narrowed to one or
two goals. But it was not until about half way through the second half that
Doncaster finally managed to tie the score. This was a crucial phase of the match,
and the two teams were locked in a highly entertaining battle for the lead.
Unfortunately, Doncaster never managed to wrench the lead off the Redbacks, and found
themselves two goals down with only 50 seconds to go in the match.
It
was all or nothing, and with a very agressive, loose defence the Omegamen tried
desperately to gain control of the ball. And succeeded. Doncaster ran a fast
break and scored what everybody perceived to be a perfectly legal goal. However, the
two overall excellent umpires decided that Travis Hardman had stepped into the 6 metre
goal zone, denying the goal. The ball was turned over to the Redbacks, who
straight away scored against a disappointed and somewhat disheartened Doncaster
defence. Instead of only a one goal lead with 50 seconds to go the scoreboard showed
a three goal difference. It was only a cosmetic change that the Redbacks scored
again on the buzzer, for a comprehensive 25 : 21 victory.
